I have a Bass No.1 Barley Wine pub mirror in original "Property of Bass" from & backing. I have been unable to find a single image of a matching mirror despite a few months of searching. Let me know if any of you want to take a crack at it.
Here is my original post: http://www.beeradvocate.com/community/threads/bass-pub-mirror-experts.194528/ Didn't get any hits that time, so I thought I'd try again. Thanks all!
Thanks. Nice find, haven't seen that one. I would also be interested in hearing from anyone who can give a little more info.
Here's what I know: Bass filed for two trademarks in 1876- the first in England was the famous Bass Red Triangle, but they also signed up the Red Diamond, which became the second-ever trademark in England. The Red Diamond was attached to their "No. 1 Barley Wine" Ale while the Red Triangle was attached to their "Bass Ale". In 2013 the idiots at InBev decided to rename Bass Pale Ale as "Bass Trademark Number One", further confusing the history of the mirror. Bass, Retcliff, & Gretton became Bass & Worthington in 1927. I need some help tracking the history of Bass Barley Wine. I think it has had several different names over the years. I've seen various adds for "No. 1" "Barley Wine" and "No.1 Barley Wine". The "No.1 Barley Wine" names seems most prevalent from 1925-1940's. Since Bass, Retcliff, & Gretton is stamped into the frame (and also on the back), I'm guessing that this mirror pre-dates the merge with Worthingon's in 1927. It's possible that OC Hawkes LTD, the mirror manufacturer, ceased operations during WWII and was moved away from Birmingham as early as 1939. Based on the research I've done, I'm expecting this mirror to have been made sometime around 1927. BUT, if Bass did not change their name on products it could have been made between 1927-1939. That's all I've got. A larger mirror advertising Burton's by the same manufacturer was up for auction in 2005 but isn't a great comparison: http://www.christies.com/lotfinder/LotDetailsPrintable.aspx?intObjectID=4546336
