Pulling dry hops or racking around them?

    I'm trying to get an idea of what everyone else does when they dry hop a beer. I just got done tying the knot on a paint straining bag. It's weighted and will sit in the fermenter for about a week. I usually try to sanitize my hand or a brew spoon and fish the bag out. After that I'd rack and call it a victory.

    I've never tried this, but I think this time I'll just try to rack around the bag in the fermenter. I could see this cutting back on oxidation and possibly leaving some beer behind in the fermenter.

    How do you prepare for packaging after dry hopping?

    I always just dry hop naked and after the 4 or 5 days make room in my beer fridge to crash the hops out. The hops drop to the bottom in a matter of 24 hours at 37f. In the winter I'll even use my cold 45-50f garage and that works in a couple days.

    I'm thinking about trying keg dry hopping next with a muslin bag and tasteless floss tied to a keg post. That would also alleviate some racking woes.

    Before I was a kegger, I sometimes dry hopped in primary. But even then, I used the weighted-bag-suspended-by-floss method, and pulled the hops out before racking.

    I rack around the bag. I have thoughts of oxidation whether I should or not.

    The last time I did this it was the first time I racked around them and it worked just fine.

    Also, I use minted floss because that's what we usually have around the house. I promise when a tiny bit of mint is competing with 5 oz of dry hops it isn't much of a contest.

    Why dry hop in the primary when you can dry hop in the keg?

    A lot of people are splitting them in both places. Supposedly there are biotransformations? that take place while the yeast is still active.

    I am one who will DH in the conical before I transfer to the keg and DH in the keg again.

    DH'ing when yeast is still at work makes for a better all around flavor. More robust hop flavor and aroma in my opinion.

    I do closed transfers- so basically the same as racking off and not removing the hops until the beer is transferred.

    Personally, I keep a Canadian in the keg.

    i bottle so dryhope necked and yes i lose some beer especially with leaf hops but not enought to bother me. Pellets usually do not cause much of a problem. If some gets in the bottle i dont worry.

    Less room in the keg for 6 gal of IPA. :slight_smile:
