Manayunk Yunkin Punkin is the closest I've had to a full vegetal pumpkin ale without any spices coming forward.

I brewed a simple homebrew pale ale to see what plain pumpkin tasted like - it lent a slightly earthy taste . Not unpleasant but I wouldn't bother doing it again. That was about 20% pumpkin compared to the amount of grain

We actually did an experiment with this 5 years ago, and the results were amazing. We brewed two beers - identical in recipe, but the only difference was one was made with pumpkin, and the other was not. And you could not tell the difference between either of them...they were indistinguishable.

When people say they taste "pumpkin" - whether its pumpkin pie, Starbucks Pumpkin frappuccino, pumpkin milk shake at McDonald's, or a pumpkin beer - they are actually saying they taste the spices most commonly associated with pumpkins (which is clove, cinnamon, nutmeg, etc.) and not the pumpkin itself.

Totally agree. Bumpkin Brewed in a pumpkin with pumpkin did not taste like a holiday classic. It smelt like your hands look and feel after gutting a pumpkin....terrible. Without spices the beer was uneventful and just a low abv lager with creamy feel. Big ups to Lincoln fill station in snellville

I tried around 15 different pumpkin brews during the season. The one I liked the most that was not too spicy was Smuttynose.

Schlafly was actually good but i tried many others and found them unfavorable. each year i try different pumpkin beers hoping for a winner. i LOVE pumpkin pie and i LOVE beer but i hate pumpkin beer. combining 2 things you love should be an insta-win; not this combo.

The problem with pumpkin beers in my opinion is that pumpkin adds nothing to a beer. It's just a gimmick. So brewers have to add tons of spices if they want to make a beer that seems "pumpkin-y."
