So I saw the video the other day about the DIY pumpkin keg, and it kind of made me want to try it.

Has anyone done this before - does it add any significant flavor to the beer, and does leaving beer inside longer help? Has anyone tries using the same pumpkin for multiple beers (not at the same time)?

If this is what you are talking about, my vote is a clear and solid "do not try". And I believe the article makes note of this, but, it carries none of the principles of kegging. Depending on length of time in there, It will result in under carbonated to flat, warm beer, and a waste of money.

But then again, DFH's randall sells. You could put a bunch of pumpkin guts in the randall to get the flavor (maybe?)

Or, just buy a pumpkin beer

I don't think the OP was talking about kegging or long-term use though. I always thought of the pumpkin keg as a very short term novelty. I.e. before a Halloween party, you pour the beer in the tapped, chilled pumpkin, so it'll be proper temperature for the party. And then it's gone (or you finish it) by night's end.

I'm going to try this at a party I'm hosting next week. Not gonna pour Rumpkin in there or anything. Will go with the cheap stuff (Punkin?), so don't really care if some spills or is wasted in the process.

I can almost guarantee that this will not really improve a beer. That being said, I'll probably do this for the lulz.

I think a better idea for a party - and a lot less messy would be to gut some really small pumpkins/gourds and use them instead of cups/glasses.

Such a terrible idea for just so many reasons. I would recommend this if you...
    1. Enjoy eating raw squash
    2. Enjoy drinking flat, warm, nasty beer
    3. Want to waste lots and lots of beer (and that's IF you even enjoy whatever beer doesn't get outright spilled/dumped)
    4. Have lots of old cans of PBR lying around and you figure it can't make them any worse, right??

I think 1,2, and 3 are mitigated by properly cleaning out the pumpkin, chilling it, and inserting the spigot before you start drinking. In and of itself, I don't see how contact with the pumpkin could make a pumpkin beer worse? Besides temperature issues that have been mentioned.

Hah, I just watched this video. The potential for this becoming a massive, soggy, leaking mess is quite high.

Ok I did this like 3-ish weeks ago and here are the results:

It took like an hour and a half to properly clean out the pumpkin and narrow down the wall so the spigot could get through.

This is exactly what I was talking about. I didn't actually go to a party, but I just tried it as a novelty idea. I poured the beer (DFH) in the pumpkin like 5 hours before I planned on it being drunk. It didn't leak and the pumpkin didn't get soggy.

As for the taste...as I was drinking I could have sworn it tasted a little bit like raw pumpkin/the spices were a little more mellowed out. It could have been all in my head, or it could have been because sitting in a pumpkin exposed to the air & whatnot.

Either way, it was never meant to improve the beer..just as something new to try. Its much better than people just grabbing out of a 6 pack. Just make sure you really clean the pumpkin, or else you'll have some pumpkin meat in your beer

Pumpkin keg? Yup got one in the basement. Southern Tier Pumking. Mighty tasty too.

Seriously, it's kind of a cool idea, but unless you keep it refrigerated, it's going to warm up.

I read something different that a guy did with pumpkins. He bought smaller ones, cleaned them out and then used them as beer glasses. Poured the beer in the pumpkins and drank right from the pumpkins. Cool idea too.

I've had beer poured through a pumpkin at local beer fests. I actually like the pumpkin flavor it adds. In fact I like it better than the "pumpkin beers" that pretty much only rely on spice. I will be making one similar for our Halloween party.
