Are beer geeks a big enough target market? Also, do you think Tim Allen drinks beer?

i dont know that the advertisement is geared to beer geeks specifically, but in most markets, no- true beer geeks make up a very small percentage of sales. At least from an on-premise retail perspective.

Love the narration, but a still frame!? Their other commercials make me want to head North but a still frame of two flights? There's so many different/cool/architectural brewpubs and brewing facilities they could've shot. Whatevs still awesome.

I think this is more about tourism than beer sales, still it's nice to see money being spent in support of the industry. One little quibble ...

    "Lift a FROSTY glass?"

Um... no (although I suppose in Michigan you probably don't have much choice for at least 9 months of the year:wink:)

Sounds almost more like they're trying to attract brewers.

I live in MN, but work in MI for now. I may get flayed by locals for saying this but Michigan doesn't have a ton going for it - hell Detroit just went bankrupt - and the craft beer scene is one of the few things going in Michigan's favor. A Michigan beercation is actually a pretty damn good trip - in fact you can do a good one without ever hitting Founders or Bell's - so the state is correct to sell it. Hard.

Also, there are some pretty good Pure Michigan spoofs.

The narration was informative, but the delivery was creepy. And I agree with "Swik" theres tons to see as far as beer goes in Michigan. I lived in East Lansing for 4 years, and while they arent known for beer as much as Grand Rapids or Kzoo, its a lot of why I am into beer.

Grand Rapids has billboards all over Michigan right now that say "Cool City, Great Beer." It's a Michigan-wide thing I guess.

A wise man once told me "In Michigan, they don't go to bars, they go to breweries". Hell, take a look at the license plates in the Bell's license plates on any given day and there is no question that breweries are a destination for out of staters.

I was born and raised in Michigan, damn proud of it, but can easily admit we have fallen on some hard times as of late. Detroit is certainly bankrupt, but we still own Cleveland.

I think the first seven seconds would be Greek to anyone else, and who else cares about so many beers being name dropped. Also, at no point in the ad did he argue that drinking Michigan beer will make you win at sports and women, so I don't think they're after the BMC crowd.
As far as I can tell he's trying to convince people on the coasts to take a Michigan beercation.

If they were targeting beer geeks they would have said KBS or Black Note, not Dragons Milk.

Sorry to be tardy to the party. Just heard the ad on the radio for the first time this morning before looking for this thread.

    This is my two cents.

IMO, This first sequence is designed to grab the listener's attention with faux-references to pop culture. Of all the beer in Michigan, they specifically chose:
    Bellaire Brown - Fresh Prince
Dragon's Milk - America loves dragons
Mad Hatter - Wizard of Oz, also Bat-Man
Purple Gang - not sure about this one
Huna-Lupa-Licious - sounds like he is slightly mispronouncing this one; either way, Willy Wonka / Charlie & The Chocolate Factory

I think the "frosty glass" line is deliberate. To a consumer who who isn't heavily into beer, this seems fancier than an unfrosted glass. By the end of the advertisement, they want Joe Lunchbox from Cincinnati to say to his wife, "You've always wanted to see the Great Lakes and now I want to know what kind of beer Uncle Phil and the Mad Hatter drink. Can't wait to have a tall FROSTY glass of dragon beer!"
