Well, I bit the bullet today and started converting my mash tun from a copper manifold to a SS braid, as I have lost a part in my compost heap. So far, so good except for the fact that I realized I hadn't got a barb. I went to the local hardware store and all they had was a PVC barb so I picked it up.

Is PVC OK for mash temperatures? It will be inside the tun attached to the braid. They claimed it is good for hot water... http://www.ansellpro.com/Attachments/38552615462963.pdf seems to indicate it can do 170F for "intermittent" but is that for potable solutions? My guess is I need Copper or CPVC but I am just guessing.

I can go out of my way to Home Depot or Rona to get a copper one (I think) later today. Just looking for advice to see if I should.

PVC is only ok for cold water. It's not even up to code for residential hot water, which is only ~120f usually.

CPVC has a higher temp tolerance if you have to, use that. I actually use it as a dip-stick/measuring stick in my boil kettle for a few seconds at a time.
