how do you think you'd like it aged in elijah craig barrels?

Never having had PVW or Elijah Craig, I cant say what the bourbon has specifically given and how it would differ from another bourbon. But I think it would have turned out the same. Sexual Chocolate needed some mellowing and smoothing out, and the barrels and bourbon were perfect for that. Aging also did that.

Im kind of tired of average beers being thrown in barrels like thats the magic fix all. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesnt. When done right it does. when done wrong, it turns into a mess.

Dark Lord says otherwise in terms of disliking a base beer and loving the barrel-aged version.

when someone says "if you don't like the beer, you probably won't like it barrel aged," an example or two of someone disliking a base beer but liking the beer barrel aged would not really count as "saying otherwise."

does what you said lead you to believe that barrel aging all/most of the beers you dislike would turn them into beers you do like?

The number of people I know who hate Dark Lord and loved the BBA Vanilla DL is staggering.

But among those people, for most other beers which have both regular and BA variants, do they display the same trend? If not, to Pahn's point, Dark Lord might just be the exception to an otherwise pretty sound rule of thumb.

There actually aren't that many beers that have a BA version of the same exact base beer.

if this were more important, i would pull a levitation and point out the falsity of this, but alas.

There really aren't! Especially if you add "readily available" so the expectation of lots of people having had both would be met. I mean, I know there are a reasonably large number in absolute terms, but I don't think there are any besides Old Rasputin that the average BA could be expected to have had the opportunity to try.

I've never even heard of either of those, or the brewer. I'm not denying that these exist (clearly, since I named one with nearly national distribution), just that there are enough to be able to expect a random BA to have built up a rule "bad base beer = bad BA beer".

Of course not. That's an insulting question. I was pointing out that "if you don't like the beer at all, you probably won't like the BA version" is not a useful rule of thumb, either. BA Old Rasputin is actually another example for me -- I can't stand regular Old Raspy. Excellent barrel aging can make a difference for the better. It's not a cure-all, obviously.
