So I have not located a "subculture" for mead/cider/what-have-you and wonder why these topics are not appreciated on this board? It seems they fit right in with what is happening here, and discussions for brewing ginger ale have taken place here without molestation? It seems oddly close minded - care to explain?

My understanding is that we can only discuss the brewing styles that are defined on this site

i.e. A cider/beer hybrid would fall under the "Fruit/Vegetable Beer" style, but a straight cider would be frowned upon.

The Bros toyed with the idea for a while. They decided against it. My guess as to the explanation is that they want to be Beer Advocate; they don't want to be You-Can-Ferment-This-Too Advocate. They decided to take a stance on where the line becomes too blurry for them. Had they ruled differently, perhaps we'd all be posting about kimchi and home made soy sauce.

It's not my website, so I don't claim to have a say in what is discussed, but I think the narrowness of the moderation is a bad thing. On other forums that I've participated in, the off-topic conversation often turns out to be the most interesting stuff.
