A little mixup with my O2 tank led to blowing the "inline filter" (that white cylinder that came with my diffusion stone) in half.

In purchasing a new one at the LHBS I got to talking with the dude and realized: Do I even need this thing? I'm going directly from an O2 tank so what is this thing actually filtering? Pure O2? That's ridiculous, right? Can't I go straight from my tank, through the stone, and be done?

You don't need it for pore O2. Using an aquarium pump, yes.

Yup, no need for the filter with pure 02.

The red cans of o2 you can buy at the hardware store aren't pure o2. They aren't intended for beer. They may contain a small amount of fine particulate. The filter blocks them. My filter is loaded with black particles.

Interesting. Have not used one of those in years, but good to know.

Medical grade oxygen intended for inhalation would be more pure than a red can of Home Depot sourced Benzomatic, but medical o2 may contain a fungicide, which the yeast might not like.

Using an inline filter is cheap insurance. I have no idea what the black stuff is. It's probably a metallic oxide. Whatever it is, it doesn't belong in my beer. Benzomatic has zero liability with respect to health issues created by using their product for beer. It's only approved use is for oxygen torches.
