The unsalted crackers are a good idea, but drop the horseradish and cheese, the beer you taste after that will taste different compared to not using either one.

While you're technically correct, they make the original Westy recipe which they used to brew under contract. So it is a Trappist recipe and I would recommend trying Abt 12 then Westy and see what changes have taken place.

I'd throw in some American Quad like Sixth Glass just for testing your palate, see if you can accurately spot it.

Last week we did a blind test of Westy, Rochefort 10, Abt 12, and Mor Mor by Brouweij West (rated 79 on here) and all 3 of us picked it above Abt 12. Surprising.

    Our rankings were
    Rochefort
    Westy
    Mor Mor
    Abt 12

None were bad by any means, but definitely expected it to go different

May have been mentioned already but I would have Some Boulevard Bourbon Barrel Quad for the american quads personally.

Skip the American quads entirely. Do two rounds separated by enough time to let the quads warm up a bit.

Last night we did the tasting. Final lineup: Westy, Pannepot, St. B, and Roc

They were all very good. Pannepot stood out the most as being quite different from the others. It might have been our favorite, but it was honestly difficult to stack it against them (is Heady better than BCBS?). I personally would have ranked it 3rd, above St. B.

I found Westy XII and Rochefort 10 to be most similar to each other, and a very tough call between them. St. B was right behind them, though. Based on our conversations (we didn't technically rank them), and incorporating all of our opinions, they - very informally - ranked out approximately thus:

    Rochefort 10 - (~1st across the board)
Pannepot - (~2nd for them, 3rd for me)
St. Bernardus Abt 12 - (last for me, 2nd or 3rd for them)
Westvleteren XII - (tied for 1st for me, ~last for them)

My own personal opinion would have Westy and Roche tied, but the order otherwise unchanged. Picking a winner or loser out of this group is inherently unfair, because they're all so good. In retrospect, I think Chimay Blue might have been a better choice than Pannepot, for a more similar flavor profile to the rest (that was my original intent, actually). I'm of course curious how Chimay, La Trappe, and Unibroue would have stacked up, although that can always wait for another day, I suppose.

I did (obviously) avoid any of the other Quads, American and otherwise, and this ended up a very, very good sample size for the three of us. We didn't burn out, didn't get particularly affected, had large enough samples to really savor each one, and had plenty of room to drink other beers afterwards.

It was a great, great time had by all, and I highly recommend any quad lovers replicate your own in the future. Thanks for all the advice (we ended up going with water, no food at all until after we were done).

    Cheers!

I did this myself with a Chimay Blue, St. Bernardus, and Rochefort. Chimay lost out really hard against St. Bernardus and Rochefort.

I think Pannepot is maybe better than Chimay to have because it's so good and should hold a better fight against Rochefort and Bernardus.
