I second or third recommending the Pannepots and Oerbier. Aside from the Trappist quads those are the best you'll get from Belgium. And as for more traditional styled belgian darks Ommegang and Unibroue do great stuff. Le Terrible is a must

Man, this reminds me that I need to host a Quad/BDSA blind tasting sometime. What with winter around the corner and all that.

To add to this point, Weyerbacher's Quad just released on Friday/Saturday, so if you can find it down your way this would be a good American Quad and it will show up in the near future if they distribute out there.

Would totally agree with this...but as someone whose best friend is Belgian, saying La Trappe is Belgian is a no no. While Trappist, it is Dutch. (not trying to be a d*ck...just know there are some people pulling their hair out on this...and my buddy is one of them )

As for the Kasteel beers...I always have them in my cellar. Cuvee du Château is a favorite for sure.

It isn't the best quad out there but if you can find any Ovila with plums that has some age to it, it's pretty damn tasty.

    Yes, at least one Belgian.

Rochefort 10 would be my foundation for any quad tastings. Some might rank it below No. 1, but I think all would agree it's a standard of the style, if not "the* standard.

You are correct. I tend to lump La Trappe in with Belgians for convenience's sake. My apologies.

Belgian rage is a horrible sight to behold
They get so politely upset (this from a Canadian).

Technicalities aside, Chimay Bleu/Grande Reserve has to be included somewhere. Had the 2012 vintage this past weekend and it was phenomenal. Much better than St. Bernadus Abt 12 and certainly it's a similar style, BSDA or Quad.

Should not have taken this long to mention Chimay. Come on guys.

Agree w putting Chimay Blue in there, even though it gets called a "strong dark ale" and not a "quadruple." Along those same lines, Trois Pistoles would fit in well with your plan here. Nothing really to add to the above. Personally I find Malheur 12 to be a very underrated beer; glad it was mentioned earlier.

I haven't seen Malheur 12 here in a couple of years. I always loved it's quirky flavor, any idea if it is still being imported?

We get it here in ATL, along with 10 and Brut.

I was in Ale Yeah! in Decatur a month ago and didn't see it. Can you suggest a store?

Grab a few Trappist products and some craft varieties as well. You will be able to taste the price difference. Ora et…
