I'm drinking my first quad right now (abt 12). It is very good and different. I also have a bottle of deschutes Not the stoic in my fridge. Are these beers similar? I know that's dumb to ask cus I could just do a tasting of both but I have a lot more beers I need to get through first so I'm just curious. What are some other quads I should give a shot?

If you mean Belgian Quadruple, then well, thats the best one so its all down hill from there. ; )

And no, they're not very similar. Not The Stoic has very little Belgian yeast presence that i could detect, granted i had it only twice.
If you gave me Not The Stoic in blind testing I'd have guessed something like "cherry flavored old ale" Akin tosomething from HoTD, only not as complex.

Rochefort 10 is the best easy to find quad imo.

Yeah I agree abt 12 is the best you can do. Some people like Roq 10 better tho. You're not gonna beat those 2.

If you're looking for similar stuff to Abt 12 you want to find Westy 12 and La Trappe Quad

Since you're in Oregon you might be able to score this:
    http://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/173/104863/

If you're getting into Quads be aware that the amount of boosiness, woodiness, and belgian yeast character varies considerably.
So it may be worth it to look at things that are commonly called Belgian Dark Strong Ale as i feel there is non trivial overlap in the flavors of the two styles. Soem would argue one caretgory includes the other in the whole.

    See for example:
    http://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/style/56/

    and compare with
    http://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/style/142/

    And for superfuntimes read this:

Rochefort 10 is one of, if not, the best Quad. I also recommend Pannepot Reserva and La Trappe Quad Oak Aged. Those brews are fantastic examples of the "Quad" category.

I'm a firm believer that whatever style of beer originated in any given country, a U.S. Brewer can make just as good, if not a better version. A quad is one of the handful of exceptions. St. Bernardus 12 and Rochefort 10 are phenomenal and relatively available.

Boulevard The Sixth Glass is pretty solid for an American quad, and very affordable. Unibroue Trois Pistoles is also very good; technically a BSDA, but very similar to a quad.

I always seem to prefer much more dark/pale fruit dominated Quads that are lighter in color. Abt 12 is a much more dark malty driven quad in my opinion. La Trappe is my favorite quad. Huge intense fruitiness with raisin, plum, fig, pear, apple, and banana with moderate malt sweetness and a good amount of spicy yeast esters. That's not to say that most of the other ones like Rochefort aren't world class, I just seem to prefer what La Trappe delivers.

haha, I took that picture; but I also took a more recent one last year. V-12 is fantastic IMO. One of my favorite US quads. It has all of the intense dark/pale fruitiness I love in paler quads with moderate bready/brown sugar malts and spicy esters. It really is a favorite.

Quads are my fave. I brewed one this past weekend for the first time and am still dealing with it. (blow off). I'm with the majority but St. Bernardus abt is the best. V12 from victory is bad ass but for an awesome experience, the st. bernardus is best.

Weyerbacher's Quad is possibly my favorite beer, period. For a Belgian/Trappist quad, La Trappe (although it'll always be Koningshoeven to me).

St. Bernardus Abt 12 is easily my favorite quad, Rochefort 10 is close. Never had Westy 12, but I'm sure, in terms of quality, it's in the same ballpark (if not better).

I second Boulevard's Smokestack BBA Quad, and I really enjoyed Stone's Quadrotriticale.

In addition to what others have been recommending, I would try the Reverend from Avery--I think its perhaps a hair underrated on BA.

I prefer Rochefort 10 to Abt 12, but I would suggest Ommegang 3 Philosophers, a quad/kriek combination, as one to try as well.

My fiancee has always hated beer, despite trying numerous styles over the years. I let her try some Rochefort 10 and she loved it. Not sure if there is a better recommendation than that.

The trinity of Belgian quads are all worth trying. Abt 12 and Rochefort 10 are perfect examples and generally easy to get. Westvleteren XII is difficult to get but if you enjoy the style it is worth seeking out.

Ommegang Three Philosophers is one of the best domestic versions of the style. The Stone Quadrotriticale came out recently and I enjoyed it over the July 4th weekend.
