So today at my LBS they got in a huge new selection of superb looking Belgiums available in 4 pack. Such offerings include but are not limited to Delirium, the new Delirium red, st. bernardus wit, act 12, extra 4 and many others, i was very excited until i saw the prices… most of the 4 packs were over $20, after much contemplation i ended up going with a six pack of Daytime and Jai alai, forsaking the 4 pack of St. bernarbus wit, which would have cost the same as those two, what would / do you tend to do in similar situations? i'm not talking about forsaking some reasonably priced but higher end craft stuff for a case of Sam Adams, but what do you usually go with when the dilemma is a small haul of expensive versus a little VERY expensive?
It depends on whether or not I have tried the beer in the four pack of Belgians. If not I think that it could be a great purchase.
World class beers like those you mentioned are absolutely worth the few dollars more you'll need to spend to get them. Don't be penny wise and beer foolish.
Depends on the finances at the time. If I have the cash I dont mind dropping $20 each on several 4 packs. If Im strapped for cash Ill go with some quantity SN Torpedo thats $12-16 a 12 pack. I will say though, that Ive found myself consistently going away from IPAs/DIPAs in bombers. Hard to justify dropping $10 a bomber on a beer that often times isnt even as good at the approximately $1 a bottle Torpedo.
I'd say I go for the quantity, but that's not entirely true. A lot of those expensive beers are limited and priced because of it without having anything to do with taste. Most 3 Floyd's bombers taste really good, but so do a lot of other bombers that are half the price. I guess I don't know what I go for, but I know I don't go for hype, which tends to get me a lot of great beer at a good price!
Those Belgians are overpriced! And you don't necessarily want a 4 pack! Maybe a single at that relative price is ok. In the UK we see some US beers in specialist shops for crazy prices. The hoppy ones may be past their prime so I don't bother. I cannot get Jai Alai here but I will bet my bottom dollar (or pound) it whoops the ass of St Bernardus Wit!!! You just know that wont much different to a Hooegarden! Maybe only worth paying out for the truly legendary beers like St Bernardus ABt 12. Now that one is good!
The first word that popped into my head was "mood". I buy what the hell I want, and I guess I always will until I'm broke or dead!
My beer choices are limited by my budget. Unless there is a drastic (and unexpected) change in my finances the bottom $ line will rule my buying decisions for years to come. Anyone who doesn't think I make good beer choices is free to send donations!
