I've long held to the belief that I hate IPA's. I gravitate to dark, malty beers. Those extreme hoppy beers that reduce grown men into squeeing teenage girls, just turn me off. But last night I tried, and really liked, Dogfish Head Aprihops. To me, I got more of a grapefruit taste from the beer than that nasty, sticky, piney taste I usually associate with "hoppy beers." This has me wondering if the type of hops used is the problem? And with hot summer days looming in the not so distant future, if I seek out beers with specific hops, I can find some new beers to enjoy. So here is my question: What beers will give me that "grapefruity" satisfaction? What hops am I looking for on the label? And which hops cause that aforementioned "sticky-piney" nastiness I want to avoid? C'mon folks, help me find a "refreshing thirst quencher" to enjoy after mowing the lawn.

You might like to give Great Lakes Chillwave and Uinta Hop Nosh a try, both are on the citrusy side of the spectrum rather than the piney side.

I find a lot of "West-Coast style" IPA's tend to be more citrusy than piney.

I find Victory DirtWolf to be on the grapefruit side, it's an 8.5% DIPA so you probably wouldn't want to pound too many of them but may be a nice sipper on a warm summer's eve.

Founders All Day IPA and you could drink a good amount since it's a session beer.

If there's any Victory Hop Ranch floating around in your area still, try that one. Easiest drinking DIPA I've ever had, loads of fruit flavor, and although it's a Jan or Jan-Feb seasonal, as a DIPA it won't fall off that quickly. Definitely worth a try if you find any.

Try a couple of milder ipas. I think you'll find them more enjoyable. Try out Brewdog - Punk IPA, founders ipa, or their all day ipa are nice and fruity without such a really harsh bitterness.

There are plenty of brews that feature nice grapefruit or tropical fruit flavor. Rather than focusing on which particular beers to buy, try seeking out the freshest IPAs from the cooler, not the shelf. Some of the more delicate hop flavors are relatively short lived and fragile in my experience.

I have a long list of IPAs I love and when it's time to buy some I'm not very particular about the name on the label. It's all about that bottled on date.

You will get lots of great suggestions in this thread, but if you buy a 6 month old IPA made with citra...

Citra hops make that great grapefruit and bitter flavor. For me Two Hearted is the balance, but they attacked a smaller brewery so we hate them. (full disclosure I'm a lot intoxicated)

Carton Boat Beer tastes like white grapefruit has been added to the brew. It's a little on the bitter side, but every time I drink it, all I can think is "white grapefruit."

If you are close to NJ, there should be somewhere just over the border where you can get it.

And if you are in western PA, Fat Heads Head Hunter is quite grapefruity.

Once I discovered fruit forward IPA's I was hooked. In time I evolved to like subtle notes of pine and I love huge dankness.

You really have to put your palate thru a sort of trials and errors period to discover what you do like. I understand where the OP is coming from. My first couple IPA's were horrible and left me thinking all IPA's are pine tree's in a can...and I shut the door to IPA's for the longest time.

I used to be a Stout/Porter kind of drinker. And I still love my dark beer. But 9 times out of 10 I want an I/IPA.

Hops are becoming better thru hybridization. Mosaic, Citra, Galaxy, Tomahawk, are my BFF's

Interesting. I find IPAs to be the exact opposite: West Coast are more piney/herbal while East Coast are more tropical/floral.

I would suggest Bell's Two Hearted, Ithica Flower Power (if available in your area), Great Lakes Commodore Perry just off the top of my head.

If you like dark beers, try out some black IPAs. That's the first ones that I liked.

Dirt Wolf, Lagunitas Sucks, Enjoy By, 077xx, flower power, GF sculpin, should all be near you. If your western PA you can prob find fat heads IPAs. If you're a trader get on Heady, Pliny, Zombie Dust, Bottle Works IPAs, Ghandi Bot, and the other hundreds of killer fruity IPAs.

Quite a few heavy citrus IPA's out there. Look for heavy Citra leaning hops, either alone or heavily hopped and dry hopped, more grapefruit. All centennial hops will give you more light orange hits, Founders Centennial, Two Hearted Ale, Racer 5 I believe too.. Do a little research and you should find some local stuff that fits, others you may have to trade for. But western Pa gets Headhunter stuff, all outstanding, Eastern PA you might get some Carton 077XX. VT and NY, Mass makes excellent IPA's that lean heavily towards fruity. Above all check freshness dates, if your on the fence about IPA's to begin with drink them as the brewer designed. If it's not dated don't buy it, some case date too so buy from a reputable shop if you can which is the bitch with Pa, but they're out there.

I'm a hop head and I thought Aprihop sucked. I don't think a grapefruit bomb is going to help you out. If you can get your hands on a Surly Abrasive the IBUs may be too much for you but it has a pear taste that you might like.
