Preface by saying, I LOVE this place and want to hang around and I'm not trying to stir the pot with this post, but get a greater understanding of how things work to ensure that I don't receive these types of warnings moving forward.

I've recently received 2 zaps for code of conduct:

1 - asking where the like avatar button is for a racy avatar (a comment which was liked by many and a comment i've seen many MANY times in other threads - i can point to about 5 times people asked that question in ongoing threads). and if that is offensive, surely having the avatar would be more offensive?

2 - posting an obvious joke to lighten the levity in a good friend's LIF...while referencing the OPs parameters for the LIF.

by no means do I think I'm being singled out with these actions, and I know that this is the bros' universe and hence their rules (take it or leave it)...but my curiosity comes more along the lines of what drives one comment to get disciplinary action and an identical comment in a different thread to not get disciplinary action? I was always under the impression that someone needed to report bad behavior for it to receive action (especially when a post is called out as being potentially offensive or inappropriate). Clearly I need to be more careful in cracking jokes, but when I see the same jokes all around me, it begs the question if I've got an "fan" who is running around flagging what I do and not flagging the same behavior when it is by other BAs.

Either way, point is taken...I'll be way more careful in what I post, but just trying to understand if this was normal forum patrolling by the bros or if these actions are all a result of people flagging my posts. My natural instinct is to flag the other posts that are identical to the ones I was disciplined for, but that seems jerky to me.

All apologies if asking about this stuff isn't cool, but my posting habits haven't changed much over the years I've been on the site and a sudden spike in disciplinary actions has me concerned.

I often wonder what I did when I get zapped as well. Nice post.

    Cheers!

My Dad use to say: "Ben I caught you doing it not your sister."
Maybe it is just who gets caught. The bros. can't catch everything.

At this point, 99% of all moderation is a result of reports from site members. We don't have the time to patrol the forums and the system is designed so we don't need too, however not everything is caught which is why we rely on site members to help us keep the forums clean.
    Here's the general flow:
    1. People don't read and/or follow the rules.
    2. They get reported by other site members.
    3. It gets raised to our attention in a mod queue.
    4. We moderate accordingly.
    5. Warning points may be issued; they accumulate and remain active for a period of time. A private notice is also sent to the user.
    6. Too many warning points = posting timeouts or site ban.
It's easy. Follow the rules. And if you get a warning, listen to the warning vs. allowing them to accumulate and result in stronger actions.

    Thanks.
