I dont think you should be worried about how many twists the cage has, if thats an indicator of a bottle not being authentic then most of my Barrelworks bottles being sold to me from the brewery are probably counterfeit.

If you arent going to post pictures for anyone to help you then shut this thread down it's of no use to anyone. No one can help you being so vague.

    Fine. Shut down.

Clearly you (among others) didn't read original post. Simple question; simple point. You apparently, with only a handful of others, simply "must have the dirt" and start the smear. I asked a simple question. Happy to shut this down.

In all fairness OP your story is rather simple and vague (on purpose) but you asked 2 simple and vague questions as well. Both questions have already been answered and they are yes and yes. Other than that is there anything more you're trying to accomplish or find out by posting this thread?

I'm not trying to be a smart ass, it's a serious question and whatever happens please post the results. I sure as hell hope nothing is wrong with your bottle no matter how or where you acquired it.

It has nothing to do with a smear campaign it has to do with trying to provide pertinent information to the community. If the original poster who first revealed the rewax TG jobs never came forward how many other people may have gotten fake bottles? Honestly you're just screwing the community by keeping the information to yourself...if someone is counterfeiting bottles it's unlikely they just did it with one you have.

I get why you don't want to call out a BA here just in case it's not counterfeit but not sure how sharing the name and pictures of the beer would do any damage to the brewery?

You hit the nail on the head. I guess I wanted the "yes" and the "yes"

My bad. Similar general questions and topics in the wine world (in which I'm involved) and in other "collector worlds" (in which I'm involved) have evoked responses on the problem and issues without the adversarial, holier than thou, and aggressive and hostile pontification of this site. (Not referring to you!)

I have to continue to remind myself that I really should refrain from posting! No one seems to mind that I've given away over 50 cases of beer to people on this site. Yet, heaven forbid I ask a simple question; really...a simple question with no ulterior motive and no accusation. Yet, I'm demonized because I've not fed the unfortunate desire of some of the more vocal individuals on here to create controversy and ill will.

If and when I make any conclusion about the bottle I've got I'll share the information via BeerMail with my friends and the few people who have made what I believe to be bona fide responses in this thread. I'm just really sick of people who primarily use this forum to pick fights. (Again, not you and not most of the responses in this thread...including the people who may be critical of me but at least reasonably critical).

Fair enough. I just think most people around here are on edge after all the counterfeiting bullshit that's been going on. I don't think anyone was purposely being malicious or if they were its because of recent events, not you personally.

As I said, I hope you keep us updated once you figure it all out and good luck. This would be absolutely disgusting if you got a fake bottle but at the same time I wouldn't be surprised. Unfortunately, as the craft beer movement grows and inflated monetary values become the "norm" more and more scum will try to take advantage.

Can we start guessing what the bottle is?
My guess is batch 1 ddg or izzy.

I fully understand not wanting to make accusations publicly without due diligence, that is an honorable move.

With the whole rewaxed Toppling Goliath bottles, you must appreciate why folks want information shared publicly. When a sensitive topic like this is approached, it is natural for folks to get concerned and want more information. Hopefully their intentions are to protect others, but sadly, as you have mentioned, sometimes the intentions are to burn someone at the stake.

It's your call on how you handle this thread going forward, but if you are able to protect other beer advocates from future counterfeits, the ends justify the means (in my opinion)

The other reason people want more information is that it makes the question of "Is this a counterfeit" very easy to answer. A photo of your bottle could be compared to a legit bottle, and differences or anomalies could easily be compared. If it looks the same, problem solved.

I'm not trying to be rude here. I read your entire post 100% and all comments before I commented. As @cfh64 mentioned your questions were answered. I'm not looking to smear anyone or any brewery. i could care less. But you can't post such an vague thread, we are all here to help you if you think something is up but its hard to do that with so little info.

I'd further add that without a photo or further explanation, this post is making people worry that their own bottles of Izzy, or 750ml RR sours, DDG, or an old Veritas vintage are fakes (or that the bottle they just agreed to a trade for is a fake), and letting those rumors continue is a little dangerous for the community.

This is like going to an expert on sports memorabilia and saying "Can you appraise my Babe Ruth autographed bat?" then saying they can't see it but you'll tell them about it.

It's more like "Can you verify the authenticity of this bat autographed by a player I can't tell you and won't show you a picture of? I also can't tell you where I got it, but I think it might be fake. Please don't get alarmed that your own bat, autographed by a player who may be the same or may be completely different, and may have come from a different source, might also be fake. You should continue to sell and value your own autographed bats as if I hadn't just introduced to the market that there may be fakes in circulation. Thank you for your help."

    This.
    And this.

IMHO, discovering you received a counterfeit bottle and not posting publicly to warn others about it verges on being a dick move, particularly after starting a thread like this.

    Srs?

GRG is one of the most generous guys here. Dude seriously has given away around 50 cases of beer, as he stated, and asked nothing in return. He has no need to come here and brag. Cut him some slack, let him use the forums for what they're meant for.

    Side note - Go Dawgs!

I am sure he is a great guy, but this thread is weird.

These trading communities depend greatly on people immediately and publicly calling out weirdness when it comes to trades.

The hemming and hawing about saying something almost always results in someone else getting taken.

If you think something is up with a bottle. Email the person you got it from and put it out in the open immediately. It either gets squashed or validated, but at least people have a chance to not get taken.

    Go Dawgs!

Agreed on all points. Just looking out for GRG. Having been the subject of one of his free boxes, I felt it necessary to put it out there that I doubt he's bragging at all.

Wife and I will be in Athens for the Kentucky game in November. If we even remember this exchange, then we should get together for some beers.

I want to echo the sentiment that GRG is a great BA. I also think quickly escalating the situation and creating unnecessary conflict is sometimes counterproductive. Especially if the evidence isn't overwhelming it is a counterfeit (and considering the level of details that are currently available, it is difficult for any of us to speak definitively on the state of the evidence).

On a side note, GRG is one of the more generous people here, and certainly does not deserve the flaming. The outrage should be directed towards the person/people who would purposely deceive and trade counterfeit beers, not someone as generous as GRG.
