Hey everyone. Coming down to Athens for my friend's bachelor party this coming Friday to Sunday. Really want to go to Creature Comfort's tasting room. We are all going to the UGA USC game so my Saturday is booked but was thinking of sneaking over there around 5pm on friday when they open for 30 minutes or so. Can anyone tell me if they are crowded around 5pm when they open? Also, what kind of beers can I expect to be on tap on friday and what beers are available for purchase to go? The house we are staying at is under 2 miles away. Do you guys suggest Uber or is the taxi system pretty legit in Athens. Thanks in advance for the answers.

    Cheers,

    Ross

You should be fine for visiting at 5PM. I was there this weekend and there were 150+ an influx of a second group and things were still very comfortable. Athens itself (if you haven't been) isn't a major city and far enough from Atlanta that it isn't really a suburb so things don't get crazy there in terms of crowds.

On tap you can expect to find Athena, Tropicalia, Reclaimed Rye, Bibo, Arcadiana and possibly some goodies left from the weekend. Cumcumber Lime Tritonia and an Athena variant are a maybe.

For purchase they'll mainly have Tropicalia, Athena and you can likely get crowlers of a few others.

Can't speak for the Uber setup in Athens but I'd expect it to be solid given it's a college town.

I would not take a cab in athens. Take uber or hire a driver. Those cabs will ruin your weekend. Make sure to hit five points bottle and you will be all set.

If you guys are in need of a tailgate, then you are welcome to join us over on river road. The typical giant tailgate setup.

Have fun, but you will have to try hard to not have a good time this weekend in athens.

@BeerLawyer85, I think you'll have a great time. Went to Creature Comforts for the first time this weekend and the place, beer and people all were great. I think it's worth pointing out that you can't just buy a pint or two in Georgia brewery tasting rooms. I"m gonna step outta the way and let a local (@DawgPhan maybe?) explain the tour/souvenir/ounce-limit thing.

He is right about swinging by Five Points Bottle Shop. My goodness! If you can get crowlers of the non-standards at the tasting room, I'd skip buying 12-ounce cans of the core lineup there and get an unlimited amount at Five Points. Cheers!

As mentioned above, the GA brewery laws are different, but a step forward from what we had before this year. You will pay for a "tour" and will be allowed to have 36 ounces of on premise consumption and the ability to take up to 72 ounces of beer home, depending on what "tour" package you choose. Have a great time in Athens, should be a fun weekend!

You should be just fine! I've seen the place packed before on random Wednesdays over the summer, but it's spacious enough that it never really seems that crowded. Great mix of people - everybody from fraternity/sorority crowd to businessmen to aging hippie professors and local hipsters. Plan to stay for at least an hour or two - it's a great friendly, chill vibe and is a cool place to enjoy some beer. They should have the beers others have mentioned and maybe something special left over from their weekly Curious Tuesday release. I personally recommend the Reclaimed Rye and Motueka-hopped Pilsner - both excellent beers for the styles.

As for the Georgia beer laws, they can only provide up to 36 oz of samples, which CC deals with by giving each guest a wristband with 6 tabs that the bartenders pull off. If you're not staying long, I'd recommend asking the bartenders for double pours, and they will take two tabs at a time for a full beer. In my experience, the bartenders have always been very friendly and willing to talk about the brewery and the beer.
    Cheers and hope you enjoy!
