I want to use leaf hops in a second fermenter 3 weeks after the original brew (I'm only brewing 1 gallon).

    What hops would you recommend?

    Would 1oz be enough?

What hops did you use initially? I would recommend using one of those since it will keep things together nicely.

Leaf hops are a bit of a crap shoot. But to me, 1oz seems a little heavy for 1gal. Could be crazy though.

EKG's are always a good choice. How much hop aroma and flavor you want in your beer? For 5 gallons I use 1-2 oz other people use more or less.

I am going to use 7 Willamette hops in the beginning, that makes sense to use the same hops.

Sorry for the dumb questions, I'm still a noob at this. I want the hops to be very prominent in the beer so I guess a 1/2 oz would be plenty.

I say dryhop with another 7 grams, but you also have to speak with a European accent of your choice that day.

7 grams, or roughly .25 ounces, in 1 gallon would be roughly the same ratio as 2 ounces in 5 gallons.

    .25oz : 1gal
    1.25oz : 5gal

Oops. Duh. My math suffered by my need to make a joke.

.4 oz. in 1 gallon (11 grams).... so I suppose .5 oz. would work and not be too much? I've never done a 1 gallon batch.

Since irish reds aren't usually dry hopped I would probably err on the side of caution, and keep it to 1/4oz or less. For future reference though, when making pale ales/IPAs 1/2oz to 1oz (or even more) would work well for your 1 gallon batches.

This person has a good method -

Mastercraft makes a valid point as an Irish Red is certainly no IPA.

OP, is this the irish red from Northern brewer? I am currently brewing a batch and was curious myself about dry hopping. How did yours turn out?

I use 2oz/5gal as a baseline for dry hopping. Most beers that's enough, or maybe three oz if I want a little more aroma. Certain IPAs have gotten MOAR hops added during dry-hopping, but generally I think 2-3oz makes for a fine beer.

An ounce of leaf hops in a gallon of beer will likely suck up a significant portion of your total end product. I would use less for that reason. I would suggest scaling on a 2oz/5gal-ish ratio. 2oz = 56g, so around 11g should work fine.

There is some debate as to whether Irish Red is a style at all or simply a basic bitter.
There is plenty of information available regarding dry hopping bitters which could be valuable. Also, homebrewing gives the freedom to do as you wish. There is no "right" amount of hops to add , the thing is to tailor the beer to suit your own taste.

I would not dry hop an irish red- just my opinion but an irish red is not about the hops- more the malt.
