    Hello.

Quick question: I have a 4 pack of Boulevard Smokestack Series Double-Wide IPA bottled beer. It is 8.8% ABV, and "expired" in August 2013 (roughly 1 year and 7 months ago).

Are these safe to drink? What are the flakes I see floating around in the bottle, and are they safe?

Safe? Absolutely. Now pop one open and give it a try and post what you think of it.

Its probably safe. Does it taste good? Most likely no! I am sure there are lots of threads regarding this particular ones and you will get those that have to chime in about it. Right now what you have is pure malt and the "floaties" are yeast and deteriorated hops floating around from what I understand.

Yes, it's safe. But probably won't taste great.

Flakes are more than likely yeast sediment. Also harmless.

The floaties are coagulated proteins, and there will be nothing in there that will make you sick. It's not so much an 'expiration date' as it just a 'best by' date. It will probably have an oxidized sherry-like or cardboardy flavor, and just not taste all that good.

Thanks for the replies, guys. Cheers!

The taste is decent. The hop value has diminished a little, but doesn't make the beer undrinkable. Since it's 8.8%, I feel a little safer.

On a slightly related note, yesterday I picked up a six of Anchor Liberty Ale and a six of Notch Session Pils. I can never remember how to read Anchor's idiosyncratic dating code, and Notch stamps a born-on date on the bottom of the cans but not on the box that contains them, so I couldn't tell just how fresh (or otherwise) these beers might be.

Turns out the Anchor's six months old and the Notch, five. Whoops.

I am not a biologist but I have been eating "expired" food for most of my life. if it is sealed up to the hour of consumption and passes the smell test ( you can smell something you recognize as food), proceed.

Hell, I can never see any dating on Anchor bottles. I woulda bought a six of Anchor Liberty weeks ago at my local shop. It's still there, natch.

Those bottles of Double-Wide IPA will not be representative of our intentions in brewing the beer, but it's important to note that no human pathogens can survive in a bottle of beer. It might not taste great, but there's no danger in drinking old beer.

Back label! Thank you, that is indeed helpful.

Some beers definitely age better than others. I would be willing to bet that the IPA you have won't be incredibly tasty but of course, it's completely harmless to yourself if you do decide to consume it.

Wait there was a date on the beer, 19 months old, and you bought it? You're more brave than I sir!

I think there'd still be some value to Double Wide at that age. Not the intent, as @TheJermis indicated, but something worth drinking.

Yeah. I hope the store had it on a huge discount. Boulevard should be informed about this still sitting on the shelf.

I sure hope beer that old has been discounted! But in all seriousness I don't gamble with IPA's that old. Stouts, porters, and barley wines absolutely.

I did have a 2 year old bottle of this saison today Pyrus Saison so I can add this to beers worth getting old.

Yep, I should have added, if you'd like to send the name and location of the store to me in a private message, I can alert a local rep to take care of the out of code beer.

Try cooking with it, maybe something good will come of it

Love that description in the same paragraph with coagulated proteins! Haha! Genius!
