So a few weeks ago I bought a bottle of Faust Brauerreserve 1237 that indicated in the back it was bottle no. 2,281 from 2,652 bottles with a date of 21.09.2022 and a 10.4% ABV. . The front says Naturtrub which means unfiltered. Fast forward to yesterday and I go to the same place I bought another bottle and instead notice the number for the bottle is 157...wow cool a low number I think. I then notice today that this bottle does not say Naturtrub, the year in the back says 2013 and that it was aged for 12 months instead of 9. To make things even weirder that expiration date is 12.09.2024. What throws me for a loop is that there is nowhere on the net that I can find this 1237 without the "Naturtrub" The 10.4% Naturtrub 1237 had a limit of 2,652 and aged for 9 months while the 10.9% 1237 had a limit of 3,092 bottles and aged for 12 months. I have even checked the website for Faust and they only advertise the Naturtrub and nothing mentioned of the other 10.9% beer. Anybody have one of these 10.9% bottles...perhaps they bought it a few years ago so the difference in the two would be that one was released earlier than the other.
Thanks....I sent him a PM. I guess the only explanation would be that one was made before the other but Im still confused about the later expiration between one and the other. Im thinking this Naturtrub version was probably put out either 2011 or 2012 while the other one was put out last year or this year. You would think though the newest one would have a later expiration date but thats not the case here
I'm pretty sure what you see is the yearly occurance of "label drift." The bottle that has NaturtrĂ¼b is pre-2013 I bet. They may just forgot to add that term to the 2013 label. As for the differnt best by dates, that's probably just a mathematical formula used which is dependent on the Alcohol percent. Notice the longer one has higher Alg. content? Relax, cellar them and pop them out and compare them in a few years. I have their Eisbock from 2012 in mine, and though it was one of the absolute best beers I'd had, i hope that it only improves with age.
These were two separate batches of Barleywine, brewed about two years apart. Both are unfiltered (Naturtrub). The yeast that was used is a good flocculator, so don't expect hefeweizen amounts of yeast. I'm not sure why the label was changed. Another little tip, check the seal on the flip top before buying a bottle (if possible). It they get hit hard during shipping/handling they can let a bit of CO2 out. You'll be able to see signs of the leakage. Prost!
Matt do you happen to know which one was brewed first. Was it the one that says "Naturtrub" or was it the one without it.
The one that says "Jahrgang 2013" on the back label is newer. It recently won a bronze at the European Beer Star competition. Your best bet is to buy a couple and to pop one out each year to taste the difference. I hope you enjoy them.
School is going very well. There are advantages to having multiple classmates whose families own breweries... Lunch breaks for example.
