So I picked up some West Coast IPA yesterday, and I've heard that they don't date the bottles. Thus, I was not surprised not to find a date on it. While, inspecting the bottles this morning I see they are stamped in the glass - no jet print - 2011. This would just be the age of the bottles right? Not necessarily the beer? I hope - thoughts - knowledge.

I don't have a definitive answer for you, but I have to wonder, what would be the point of date stamping a glass bottle?

Most US beer bottles have long been embossed with the year (last two digits) of manufacture by the glass company (just as many other industrial products are dated). When BBC had a recall a few years back over defective glass, that's how they id'ed the bad batch(es).

The year used to be on the base itself, now it's typically around the bottom of the bottle, along with other manufacturer's pertinent info (plant, line, etc.) You'll often see "O-I" which identifies it as being manufactured by Owens-Illinois.

It's a handy way to help date old collectable bottles- at least throw-aways. Returnable/reusable deposit bottles were used many times for several years, of course.

Green Flash dates all of the bottles around the bottom now. Look closely and you will see it. The West Coast IPA I bought Friday was 7/9/12. Cheers!

Should be marked if new. If old, you will see a shit load of sediment in the bottom. When fresh, one of the best IPAs ..........

I just saw Hop Head Red and Double stout in 4 packs today...I didn't even know they made them, I've only seen bombers.

Both used to be in 6 packs before they changed the bottle and package design. Hop Head and WCIPA i mean.

they are bottle dating as of 5/29/2012 I believe, so anything without a date would pre-date that timeframe... good luck... fresh West Coast IPA is a fantastic beer...

I see. WA state liquor has been so regulated that we never had any "liquor warehouse" type stores, which caused us to not have any stores dedicated to any alcohol(in Eastern WA at least), like beer since it was split up. Total Wine is coming to town so I'm looking forward to seeing things like 4 packs GF and 6 packs of Ruination...

The worst part is I left CA 3 years ago before I was into craft beer...all those wasted years with breweries like Russian River at my fingertips!

On that note, I'll be off to have some WCIPA on tap in a couple hours

Correct. Also, the dated bottles have a new cap.Similar to the old one except that it actually says Green Flash Brewing Co. San Diego,CA. to go along w/ the logo.

    Cheers

The ones I had did not say Green Flash or anything on the cap and there was no date, so it must have been a little old. It was damn good though - the wife really liked it as well. Now, I must find some fresh and compare.
