I've probably had each equally. The experience was pretty much the same both ways. I think appearance is by far the least important part of a beer drinking experience, floating chunks really don't bother me. I notice no effect from the Aluminum in the smell or taste when it comes from the can. Both methods yield an extremely good hop experience. Try them both and see which one might suit you better. Maybe the brewer is concerned with appearance, maybe not. Maybe he thinks that you could lose some of the concentrated hop punch from the agitation of pouring, maybe not. Either way, Heady Topper rules.

try one out of a glass and try the next one out of the can, see how you feel about it. i've tried both a bunch of times and enjoy both, although i think i still prefer it out of the glass.

I drank one from the can, and one from the glass, and definetely prefered drinking it from the can. I found that because it has such a fresh smell, you really don't want it to come into contact with anything that may change that. For instance - I drank one out of a glass from a bar, and the scent of the detergent they must have used through off the fresh hop scents you got from the can.

I know this sounds ridiculous, but it is definitely what I found...

I drank my first from the can, my second from a glass, my third from the can as it should be.
Interesting...why so many questions about this?

I went glass, can, can, can on my first 4. Try both, pouring into a glass doesn't ruin it by any means. But I think taking a whiff of the beautiful hops in the can before taking a sip is awesome.

I also liked it better from the can. It confused me a bit because rule of thumb is that almost all cases beer is better when poured into a glass. From the can it had a fresher crisper taste. In a glass the hops seemed a bit flat, still awesome but not quite as good.

For me personally it seems very "old school" to drink beer from a can. The unique thing about Heady Topper is it allows you to experience that "old school" feeling but with the flavor of a great DIPA served in a glass.

Experience it both ways and you decide.

    Cheers!

The "old-school" aspect is exactly why John Kimmich wants it to be drank out of the can.

I do believe in trying it the way the brewer intended... afterall, isn't that how we rate beers? Rate to the style intended, right?

Try it both ways. I had my first recently at a bar in MA and I tried it both ways...poured a little into a glass, and drank the rest from the can. I'm almost always a fan of the glass, but this tasted pretty darn awesome from the can.

But if we drink the beer the way the brewer intended we cannot accurately rate the beer now can we?

There are many theories as to what the "brewer intended". All we know is what is on the can and that is open to interpretation. I am more inclined to believe the can suggests consuming from the can due to the cloudy, resinous appearance. I have found that letting the beer settle in the fridge and a careful pour is just as effective. I have no problem if someone prefers to drink from the can but I will never be convinced that it is a superior drinking vessel.

If you're referring to being unable to rate its appearance while drinking from the can, just pour some of it in a glass, as I did, to see its color, head retention, etc. And then drink some from the can to compare. If the claim to drink from the can is part of the beer's personality/mystique, why not try some of it from the can for fun to see what the brewer is talking about?

People try to convince you that a can is a superior drinking vessel?

I have tried it both ways, that is not really what I am getting at. As many times as this subject has been brought up people always speak about the brewers intention. All we really know is that the can says to drink from the can, we really do not know what the actual intention behind that is.

It is not necessarily that people are trying to "convince" me but many seem to be making the argument for drinking it from the can or that the can is the superior vessel in this instance. All I am saying is that I don't buy it.

Everyone's pretty much chimed in on this already, but I think Heady Topper is one of the best-smelling beers I've ever had and drinking it out of the can really takes the aroma out of the experience of this beer. I've tried it both ways and greatly prefer drinking it out of a glass.

And also make sure to report back with your results.

I only had one can so had to do a 50/50 split (can/tulip glass). I preferred the taste from the can but the aroma from the glass is also amazing. Since aroma actually also affects perception of taste, it can get complicated. But having more than one can opens up some options for you, especially if you do a side-by-side.

Better in the can. It simply isn't a pretty beer. Tastes awesome, but definitely better looking in the can.

I don't think anyone here is saying that drinking it from the can is a superior vessel. I simply implied my experience was one I found to be "old school". I don't know why the brewer recommends drinking it from the can but obviously if it's recommended, there must be a pretty damn good reason.

I have only had one can and poured half into a glass and left half in the can, I found that is was a little malter in the glass, but it was not a very noticeable difference. A few people talked about the floating chunks and I found them a little off putting, hence a 4 for appearance. The next time I have Heady Topper I am going to drink it straight from the can and not worry about cleaning a glass.
