Question about keeping growler beer fresh

    I've had a 64oz. growler of Foothills Jade IPA in my fridge for a week now and I was going to share it with friends tonight. Well, we called the evening together off because everyone is dealing with the record breaking rainfall we've had here in the last 24 hours and I want to enjoy it while it's still fresh so I'm going to start on it tonight. I don't want to drink the whole 64oz. myself at one sitting so I'll drink half of it tomorrow night watching Penn State knock off Michigan. So to keep it as good as possible, would it be advisable to pour almost half of it into an empty 750ml swing top growler right off the bat and seal it or would it be best to just keep it in the big growler overnight? Thanks for any advice

    Once you pop the growler, you've got a day or two (max) before it will be completely flat, even if immediately re-capped and refrigerated. Transferring it to another vessel I doubt would do much to slow the effects, but maybe I'm wrong?

    It should be fine to keep it in the original growler if you plan on drinking the rest tomorrow night, though you may already notice less carbonation, etc.

    Once you crack it open. Basically a day. Possibly two, depending on the style.

    I've had growlers where I've had a little less than half and resealed it immediately last the next day with some carbonation left. I've always questioned pouring the beer from the growler into a flip top bottle. I know there's less air but the liquid is also being agitated quite a bit. I would love to know.

    On the other half, there's a tavern near my hometown in Pa, that doesn't know how to fill growlers. I opened it two days after having it filled and it was completely flat. I know it's supposed to be consumed within 24 hours, but I was spoiled with Stones growler fills that seem to last weeks and have ample carbonation.

    Once you open it, every pour you have you are introducing oxygen. I would think that pouring it into another vessel would probably increase oxygenation unless you have a way to purge the other vessel with co2. If you can't drink it all in one night I'd recommend drinking it quickly because it will go flat and oxidize. It will still be drinkable but not very good.

    You can blast C02 into the growler after opening like some people do with wine bottles. Although I'd suggest finishing your growler in ample time before it goes flat.

    Time is the enemy. Cap it tight, and I use stretchy wrap around the cap to lock it and make it airtight. May or may not help the problem is all that air in a half filled growler.

    I've had a CCB Guava grove Sour growler open for about 5 days, and its still slightly carbonated. Maybe its making its own bubbles from the bacteria?
    Also had a bottle of 750 Perennial Peach Berliner that I opened, recapped after drinking half of it, forgot about, recapped, and when I opened, it had a ton of carbonation left.

    Must be a style thing.

    I've had unopened growlers of some brown ales and stouts last months without any loss of carbonation or flavor.
    (not even counterpressured, just completely filled to the flip top cap.)

    Was thinking the same thing. The pressure valve that ensures it stays below 9 PSI seems to be the key. Hopefully they (or someone else) can pull it off at scale. What's the cost of flat growler beer? If the device can last a couple of years it will absolutely pay for itself.

    One you open it the clock is ticking. Pouring it into another vessel will only speed up the decline.
