So I'm kinda dating this chick from Farmington Hills, MI just outside of Detroit. I wanted to surprise her with some beer that only people from Michigan would know. I looked online and found that apparently Michigan is home to so many amazing craft brews, that one didn't stick out, kinda like Yeungling does when you think of PA or Stone in San Diego, CA. Even different regions of MI have their own favorite.

Anyway, just wondering what the most popular MI (or Detroit-area if it's different) light beer would be. Would it be Oberon? Not looking for the most sophisticated masterpiece, but more of the type of thing that's like "haha how did you know about that?" I guess what I'm saying is I'm looking for the Faygo of beers.

Personally, I'd go with Motor City Brewing's Ghetto Blaster. It's a great mild ale and it's from Detroit.

Thanks for the suggestions, Ill probably end up getting them all and have a fridge full of good beer anyway!

Unfortuantely, I don't think they carry Ghettoblaster in Los Angeles.

Atwater Dirty Blonde is a popular "light" beer from Detroit.

Oberon definitely doesn't fit the "only people in Michigan would know" though. It's wildly popular throughout the Bells distribution footprint, which is a huge chunk of the contiguous 48.

Yeah, if you're looking for something that only MI people would know....you'll need to get it in MI probably. You could get some of it in neighboring states maybe, but not in CA. I would agree that Oberon would fit the Faygo of beers pretty well, but it won't be a "how did you know about that" experience. That would be places like Short's, Kuhnhenn, Perrin, Oddside, Batch, etc.

I might fall into the camp of rather having some Faygo Rock & Rye and Better Maid chips than some Oberon.

Yeah OP, as others have started Oberon is pretty much known everywhere Bell's distributes so it doesn't seem to satisfy your "beer only people from Michigan would know". I think you need to go all in and make a trade with some of our MI brethren for some more obscure Michigan beers to really impress your lady. I would have said Short's six months or so ago with their Michigan only, Michigan forever but we all know how that turned out.

Isn't that literally what they used to call Short's Soft Parade (and how it is still often referred)?

Unless this chick has a neckbeard, I'm pretty sure Oberon is going to accomplish what this guy is trying to do.

    I don't think I'd consider DCT a light beer.

I feel like the correct answer is Two-Hearted. I though someone would have mentioned it here already. When I think of my home state it is the beer that comes to mind. Delicious, easy drinking, and ubiquitous as far as craft goes.

Does she like Kid Rock? Get her some Badass. :grinning:

In all seriousness, I'd say either Oberon or Founders All Day IPA. I'm guessing she's not huge into beer, so I think some of the above suggestions might be pretty obscure for her, too. Back up options are Founders Rubaeus or Dark Horse Raspberry Ale. Deep back up options are Atwater Dirty Blonde (unfortunately, but she's probably heard of it) or Short's Soft Parade (although at 7.5%, it's definitely not light).

The more I think about it, something from Griffin Claw in Birmingham may work. They distribute through MI well, and it's not too far (10 miles) from Farmington Hills. It's plausible she'd know about them even if she's not huge into beer.

Lastly, if you're looking for something that makes it to LA, you're probably again best off with Oberon.

I'm not sure what makes it to LA, but if she isn't a big beer drinker than you are limited to what you can get locally. I'm guessing Bells and Founders is it. If this is the case I'll join the band and say Oberon.

If she is knowledgeable with the Michigan beer scene and enjoys good beer that is another story - in this case get a hold of any of us locals and set up a trade.
