So I have an arbor out front where the hops grew east to west over the top. My house faces south and the arbor is over the path on the south side of the house.

Since the hops are going to be third year and likely want more space to grow, I was thinking I would run a few lengths of twine from the top of the arbor to the house next year. This would mean they would have to travel north as they made their way up the twine. It would be a pretty steep angle so they would still be going up as they did so.

Will they do that or will they naturally try to go south toward the sun?

You may have to wrap them around the rope once but that should work. I made an arbor with rope strung between two trees with rope staked straight down and the hops grew straight up.

hops do most of their growing in the evening/after dark and will wrap around the twine in a clockwise rotation..so as long as they are allowed to climb and have plenty of sun, there should be no issues
