To all the handy types out there (of which I am moderate at best), I just got a great deal on a Kenmore 12.1 cf upright freezer ($299). Started filling it up and noticed the wire shelving containing bombers begin to bow from the weight. To all those with upright freezer cellars, what, if any, modifications did you make to accomodate the weight of so many bombers? And even if you don't use an upright as a cellar, but have some knowledge in this area, I'd appreciate some suggestions on how to fortify and/or replace the current wire shelves to handle the load of so much good beer.

    Cheers to all for suggestions!

i have the same issue. i cut 2x4's and placed them as support for the bottom shelf. i used that shelf for bigger bottles, basically have the shelf legs and middle support.

I replaced the wire shelves with glass. I had the local glass guy cut mine from tempered safety glass. They will hold a shelf full of beer, and I actually gained the space for 11 or 12 more beers! The glass cost about 16 or 17 dollars. If you decide to do this, measure carefully, lots of fridges are not square, either from side to side or from front to back. Tempered glass can not be cut again!

@lightman1 How exactly did you do this like did you use the hardware from the wire shelves or did you get new. Have any pictures available? Thanks for any info.

Ringhale, its been a busy week for me and I'm sorry that I'm just now seeing this! I'll try to post some pics this weekend.

The original wire shelves had studs on the ends that pinned into recessed holes in the side of the fridge. I removed the shelf and cut some steel rod that I inserted into the existing hole and laid the glass on the steel rods. I used 3/8 in all-thread.

I also helped a friend do his fridge, but his was a little different. His had grooves in the sides that the shelves slid into. This is when I learned that some fridges are not square!

Here are a few pics of my shelves and the supports that I used.

This is the end of the original shelf.

This is the rod and the way that I installed them.
