So I brewed my second batch last night and a few hours later noticed my airlock had lost water? What would cause this ? I refilled it and it has disappeared again. This kit is new and this didnt happen with the first batch. I was very happy with the way this batch went as I hit all the points of the recipe such as boil temps etc perfectly and I have no fermentaion bubbling at all 12 hours later. What could be wrong here?

Three piece airlock or the one peice style?

Did you pitch at a high temperature? If the temp of the beer drops drastically in the bucket it can create a vacuum and suck in all that airlock water- hopefully with sanitizer.

Another possibility is that the big piece has a crack in the stem and it's leaking into the fermenter. Or it has a crack in the body and is leaking down the side of the fermenter. Also, sometimes a vigorous fermentation can cause some of the water/vodka/whatever to splash up and out of the airlock lid holes, though that would be minor.

It seems to be OK now I actually piched slightly low the emp was to be 65-72 and I think it was 61 when I pitched it. I did read on a nother forum about what your saying and this may have been the cause now that the temp is stable I have fermentation and the water is staying. Thanks for the tips though.
