One of my favorites is Franziskaner. It's often overlooked, being brewed by Spaten, but it's delicious and consistent.

Paulaner is pretty good, as well. There aren't many US-brewed Hefes that I really like, but that's at least partly due to the availability of the great German varieties; if you can drink Weihenstephaner bottles and Franziskaner draught whenever you want a Hefe, why bother chasing down the "next great" Hefe? Enjoy what you have!

Paulaner is a must if you haven't had it yet, great balance and mouthfeel. Schneider Original is excellent and leans to the clove-y side. Spaten Franziskaner leans to the banana.

Franziskaner along with Tucher are my personal favorite favorites for the style.

Belgian, not German, but one of the best I've ever had is Blanche de Bruxelles. Nothing better in the summertime.
Second would be Ebel's Weiss by Two Brothers. I'm not going to endorse seeking out a trade as much as some people are with Dancing Man, but if you have the opportunity, do it.

More often than not I pick up Troegs Dreamweaver Wheat. Troegs knows how to brew German styles, and this is typically the freshest offering at my liquor store. I'd rather have a < 3 month old Dreamweaver than a > 6 month old Weihenstephaner, as much as I love it.

There are a number of PA breweries that make high quality Hefeweizen beers.

Troegs Dreamweaver Wheat has been mentioned but there are others:

    · Sly Fox Royal Weisse (available in cans)

    · Stoudts Heifer-in-Wheat

    · Iron Hill Hefeweizen

    · Victory: Sunrise Weissbier & Mad King Weisse

    · Etc.

Straub made a tasty Hefeweizen this year as part of its Summer Variety pack.

This summer even Yuengling made an authentic Hefeweizen (Summer Wheat).

    Cheers!

Erdinger is my favorite Bavarian dunkle. That said I recently had a pretty good German-style Hefe from Sudwerk (Davis, CA).

I was just thinking I need some lower abv options this summer. Too many DIPAs. Can anyone suggest some solid Hefes or wheat beers that don't have spicy characteristics? Some of the Germans are too spicy.

Is La Cumbre shipping to arizona yet? I know a couple hefe lovers in ABQ that are really fond of their "Slice of Hefen". Cheers

I concur with a lot of what has been already said here: Paulaner (my personal fav), Franziskaner, and Dreamweaver Wheat. I'd also like to add Mission Brewery's Hefeweizen. It's a smaller brewery based out of San Diego and it is wonderful fresh out of the tap at their tasting room. It distributed out to as far as MD when I lived there despite the brewery's size.

I mentioned Spaten Franziskaner above, and it might be what you're looking for. It's got much more banana than spice.

Oh, and as long as we are extended beyond traditional Hefes, I'd like to add Breckenridge Agave Wheat.

Did Zum Schneider have any of the Hofbrau Traunstein Weizens on when you went there?

That is pretty good stuff. I need to find Boulevard Wheat as well, loved it in Law School.
