    Hey guys,

I was just offered some nine-month-old Hopslam in exchange for a certain, widely-available beer. Is this a good trade? I'm concerned about the freshness of the Hopslam. Thanks.

I was advised against it not to long ago. I would wait if I were you. I want it fresh the first time I have it.

If it's widely available beer for trade, what's it hurt? I say do it, and compare it when you get a fresh batch. Take notes on what you can get, compare them to the fresh batch when you're able to get a fresh batch next year. Have fun! That's the whole point of craft!

Three months is pushing it. Now, it won't be close to what it should be.

Agreed, the beer you drink won't resemble Hopslam at all.

I've had it < 1 month old and with a friend we did 3, 6, 9 and 12...by 3 months was losing the hoppiness and balance and by 9-12 months it tasted exactly like Blue Moon

Hopslam flavor and aroma fade very quickly. Even 4 weeks is pushing it. I don't get more after 2-3 weeks of its being in my area. If you've never had Hopslam before, don't walk away but RUN AWAY from this or any other IPA this old.

This is terrible advice, no offense. Never trade for an IPA over a month old. they will be a malt bomb!

No reason to be concerned about the "freshness" of that beer - after nine months, it no longer exists.

I guess I should probably be more clear since it seems as though folks are misinterpreting my suggestion. What I'm saying is, it's low-risk, right? Widely available beer for one of the best IPAs out there. In no where did I suggest that it's the same at nine months, as when it's fresh. I simply am implying that it wouldn't hurt to have a little fun with it now and compare it to when one gets a fresh batch. If the posting would've stated, "I only want to do it if Hopslam will taste the same as it does fresh" I would've warned him just as though most of the people in this thread are. It'll still be a good beer at nine months, it'll just be a different experience. So, yes, it won't be as "fresh" but will still be a unique brew.

No , I'd pass , expensive considering shipping for an old ipa. No way it's worth the trouble, but that's me.

I understand the point you were making. Yes it would be low risk and it's not like OP would giving up anything really. But he will spend money on supplies and beer to make the trade happen when its not worth it. This would be synonymous for paying double for a 6 pack of 9 month old hopslam at the store right now. That's why its a bad idea.

just to clarify for the sake of this thread, there are PLENTY of IPAs that are NOT malt bombs at 1 month, or even 2 months of age. Hopslam is not one of these beers however. It's a malt bomb at 1 day of age.

I just tried a bottle that was being cellared for fun. Two years on it, some notes of honey remained that toned down the maltiness, not very highly carbed, but no oxidation at least.

Oh, but it didn't taste very good.

As bad as Hopslam is fresh, I can't even imagine drinking it after 9 months.
