A friend back East keeps telling me to try more sours and so I have been.

So far my favorite thing has been the GhoulsChip from Allaghash followed by the Sour in the Rye from Bruery. Any suggestions of similarly tasting sours is appreciated.

You should give some Berliner Weiss styles a try like 1806 (I think that's thr year), Grand Teton Berliner Weiss and Lightening Sauerstruck.

Yup. Given you're in California, you should seek these out.

Monk's Cafe sour is a good beginner sour as well.

I still don't get how petrus pale and monks cafe are anything close to the allagash and bruery beers the op likes...

Try Duchess de Bourgogne. Easy to find, and it's as good as any sour I've had.

Try Sans Paige,Rueze,Tart of darkness, or Oude tart from the Bruery. They are their most commonly available sours.

There aren't a lot of American beers in the taste profile range of Allagash sours. You have been recommended to try Russian River sours/wilds and I heartily recommend you ignore all other advice you receive here until after trying
    Consecration
    Supplication
    Sanctification
    Temptation

These are what you seek if I may be so bold as to say it.

After those, especially if you like the funk and delicious yeast tart of them, I recommend moving to Belgian offerings. I would start with some of the more affordable, Lindemanns Cuvee Rene', Boon Marriage Parfait, Rodenbach Grand Cru. Then when you are good and hooked, and willing to tithe future earnings to the Church of Bugs in Beers, try the rest of the universe of them, especially 3F, Cantillon, Tilquin, DeCam, etc.

reliable fast and good selection of sours usually. They have RR.
If you're not close enough to go to whole foods which usually has supplication or actually to santa rosa and visit RR.

A brewery not mentioned yet: Cascade. So far I've had Sang Noir, The Vine, Blueberry and Apricot, all have been very good. I just picked up a bottle of Vlad the Imp Aler, but at $30 this was probably against my better judgment. Looking forward to trying Bottleworks XIV too...

The good thing about Cascade is, the brewery will ship direct to you.

Uh yeah i kinda just bought the only RR's they had left for now. Sanctification and Supplication. Only had 1 of each but very good online beer shop. Usually have really good beers and will def have more RR soon. Id say Ichtegems Oud Bruin would be a good one to easily find, although it is a Flanders.

Duchesse is a great intro (as already mentioned) but New Belgium La Folie is one of my favorites. Also La Lolita and Juliette by Goose Island are amazing... This is an East Coasters take on sours though, you have a ton of great stuff out there we can't get over here!

no such thing as a beginner sour imo, that just means they are way worse.

start with the RR, realize you love sours and nothing else in the world matters, and let the games begin

Gotta wonder how many people so far read the entire post and not just the first sentence. The suggestions have ranged from acetic bombs to lactic bombs, dark to pale, and every sour style people can think of.

Well the OP is looking for beers that are similar to a sour Pumpkin beer and sour Rye beer.

There are only a few sour Pumpkin beers and none of them are worth recommending. I'm not aware of any sour Rye beers except for the one he drank.

    So, what are your recommendations?

Recommend something similar, as opposed to just naming all your favorite sours. Sour in the Rye - I would say it's pretty lactic dominated, low acetic, with a light barrel character and not a huge amount of funk as far as the sour profile goes. So Cascade beers, which I find fit that profile for the most part. So if I was recommending something I'd start with some of the Cascades, like maybe the Apricot due to availability, noting that it's much fruitier than Sour in the Rye. Based on my impressions from Sour in the Rye, I'd say that a berliner or Flanders red is a terrible recommendation.

I haven't had Ghoulschip so I won't recommend anything based on that, because it wouldn't be helpful. Unlike a lot of the stuff in this thread.
