I once brewed a good deal and then got into wines, but now am back at it (kits). i made a simple american ipa to refresh myself and its day 11 and its so murky. i forgot to place the wort chiller into the boil, but i had cleaned it, and soaked it fully in star san. smells ok, but weirded out that its not clear at all. did i contaminate because i didnt place the chiller into the boil?
I don't see any connection to the chiller being an issue for the haze. It's likely that your kit uses a yeast that is slow to drop out of suspension. Do you know what yeast it was? P.S. Welcome to the BA site and to the homebrewing forum. You're welcome to hang around here as much as you'd like.
thanks! it called for Wyeast #1272 american ale II it does say two packets but the kit only came with one. perhaps thats it
Your pic doesn't show up, at least not for me. It doesn't look like there's a direct link to an image file. Underpitching could cause your fermentation to be slow, which might delay yeast settling (because they are still fermenting sugars). Even without underpitching, Wyeast 1272 isn't the fastest flocculator. Also, low calcium levels in your wort/beer can delay settling. You mentioned 11 days. Is that 11 days in the fermenter? Have you taken a gravity reading to see where your fermentation is?
The pic doesn't show up for me either. OP, did you use a third party hosting site for your pic? Sites such as Imgur.com have to be used for inserting a pic in a thread posting. Once uploaded to the site of your choice, copy the Direct Link (not the URL) onto your device's clipboard and then post it into the Image dialog box (on the toolbar above next to smiley face) and click okay. The pic will appear where your cursor is positioned.
i'm thinking under pitching. I have not taken a gravity reading but will soon. yes, day 11 in primary. was going to dry hop this sunday or so. I see zero activity, so i do believe its done fermenting. i will say that the active fermentation was rather good, but slowed down after 4-5 days. ill try the pic again. ty!! im on a chrome book and cant attach a pic
