So back in November, I made a trade for some Hill Farmstead beers. I was supposed to get bottles of Civil Disobedience #3 and Birth of Tragedy as well as a 750 ml growler of Twilight of the Idols. I even sent my box up early with a 750 ml Hill Farmstead growler included so that the guy could save a few bucks. When my box arrived, the CD3 and Birth of Tragedy were there, but instead of the growler, there was a bottle of HF Daybreak. Admittedly this was fair value, but that was not the trade we agreed to, and I really had no interest in the Daybreak. I BMed the trader and alerted him of his mistake and he promised to make it up to me by sending me a growler of whatever I wanted the next time he went to Hill Farmstead. I sent him several BMs over the next couple of months whenever something interesting showed up on tap at HF, but he always responded that he was too broke to make a trip up there.

So, finally, after three months had passed and I was pretty confident that he would never make good on his promise to make things right, I decided to take a trip up to HF myself. I sent the guy a BM asking if he could, at the very least, send me back my empty growler before I went. Interestingly, he noted that he too was going to be at Hill Farmstead for last weekend's release and that he could give me back my growler in person if I was going to be there. However, our trips didn't coincide, so that didn't work. He never offered to send me a full growler from the release, as he had promised, and instead offered to mail me $3 (the cost of the growler), which seemed like a huge "fuck you" to me. I haven't heard from him since, and I haven't received the growler or the $3, so I'm wondering if this is worth outing someone over, or whether I should just get over this and move on. The guy has posted several FT posts recently, so I want to make sure others don't have experiences with him like I did.

    Worth outing him- YES

He didn't send the agreed upon beers (not all at least). The Daybreak should be viewed as an "extra" not a replacement.

    Not questionable. Seems like BS.

If you are broke, you should not be trading. People do not seem to get this.

This trader is probably a great person though and a lot of people will have their back not yours.

    Oh ya, out them.

Out him, especially since he has been trading since then. People don't realize trading is a luxury, not a necessity. If you cant afford to trade, dont do it. Just go buy beer you can get without trading.

Alright. I'll out myself to avoid this turning into a debate. I live 4 hours from Hill Farmstead and therefore I cannot drive back anytime in order to grab growlers. I was making a handful of trades with Hill Farmstead beers at that time and made a mistake when I sent him Daybreak. I thought another user sent me the 750ml growlers. He seemed fine with it and said that Daybreak was a fine replacement at that time, not that he had no interest in Daybreak, but did remind me that he *did* send me the growler. So, I figured I would fill it next time I was up there. He didn't express to me that there was a time limit on that deal. Recently he sent me this BM before I was heading back up:

    Hey man,

I'm going up to Hill Farmstead next week and I was hoping you could send me back that 750 ml HF growler of mine that you have so I can use it up there. Alternatively, if you have a PayPal account, you could also just transfer me the cash it would cost to buy one (what are they, like $4?). Sorry to bug you about this again, but you did offer to make it right.

    Matt

So, I offered to give him the growler while I was there. But it was different times. Then I offered to send him the $ as he had asked. And got paid yesterday, remembered, and sent it out. I didn't know this affected him so much. But I'm glad to work out someway to make it right as I now realize Daybreak was not a suitable substitute, and he really didn't want the $ at all.

    Cheers all.

Posting people's personal messages is pretty lame.

Since he chose to ring this up in an open forum, I just wanted it to be clear that he asked for the money. This was not an offer meant as any kind of "fuck you."

What was personal about the messages being posted?

Why? He has the right to tell his side of the story. There's plenty of instances where I feel it is fine to do so. I agree, sometimes it is lame, but in cases like this or other cases of potentially bad trader reports, I don't see a problem with either party showing private messages. Its not like he gave away his real name or address or place of work or anything actually "private".

He should have sent you the right stuff in the first place, but holy cow, it's $3. I understand you're upset about the deal, and I'd probably be annoyed myself, but I don't think I'd ask him to spend $10 to ship a $3 growler.

Can we turn this in to a "call out a bad trader" thread?

This is precisely why people should not do these "I'm going to a remote brewery, so I want to pile up a whole bunch of sweet trades for this one trip!" deals. People often end up screwing them up, shipping the wrong beers, forgetting which beers go to whom, unable to fill a pre-trade because they ran out of something, etc, etc. And then, when problems arise, you're so far from the brewery that you can't rectify the problem very easily. Everytime I see a "hey I'm heading up to Hill Farmstead, or whatever brewery, BM me if you'd like to setup some deals!" I cringe because I know there is a good chance a thread like this one will follow in a couple of months. Just do your trades AFTER you come home with some bottles/growlers!

Putting aside the he-said/she-said... The right thing for you to do would have been to immediately offer to setup another deal with somebody more local to HF upon learning of your mistake. Have the local ship the growler directly to starrdogg, you give the local what he wants, and everyone is happy and whole. If starrdogg truly felt that Daybreak was an adequate replacement, that would be one thing, but it seems he did not. Sometimes the other person is just being a little too nice and you need to be a bit more forceful about rectifying the situation.

If you're going to be doing multiple trades, and by multiple I mean anything close to confusing you, then WRITE IT DOWN. I don't nderstand how people mess this stuff up.

This x1000000. Even when I have only 1 trade being sent out, I write down what I'm sending and what I am receiving (Including writing down the extras I sent, just so I know).

I personally avoid the problem by having a twelve bottle box set aside solely for a trader. As I get the bottles they go into the box. How do people mess this up?

I agree with your sentiment about setting up too many pre-trades 100% and would never make that mistake again. As for the rest of the situation, without all of the old BM's, it's hard to comment on it. The way I remember it, I never promised any particular growler coz I didn't know what might kick before I got there, but he said Twilight would be "preferred." And when Daybreak arrived said, "I'm not going to complain about getting a Daybreak instead, but I *did* send you a growler, haha." And what happened after that has already been discussed.

I always write it down as well. It helps me remember. I keep a spreadsheet (Google Docs) where I put down what was agreed upon and whatnot so I can just pull that up when I'm at the store or in my cellar or whatever if I need to.
