Even though I made a first brew post a long time ago I didn't do my first brew until today due to unforeseen circumstances.

I have an OG of 1.012, but that's supposed to be the lower range for the Final Gravity of the instructions.

Is this salvageable or will my beer be undrinkable or just have a higher or lower ABV?

Edit: For reference the hydrometer I used that came with the Brewer's Best kit was an LD Carlson and it's most obvious measurement was 50 for "Start" with an approximate alcohol level between 15 and 10 percent.

Also it has Brix on it.

You've not given us enough info to be able to help you. Was this an extract beer kit or all-grain? What were your mashing/brewing procedures to get to this OG level? If you can list the recipe too or a link to the kit would also be helpful.

Unless you made a major mistake when measuring this OG, I think you will have to pitch this attempt at brewing this beer because there is no sugar to ferment into alcohol.

I'm unsure what you are saying about your hydrometer. Most will have 2-3 scales to read, and the one that you want will have 1.000 at the top. Is that the scale that you read?

I will hazard a guess that you did make a major mistake with your hydrometer. You looked at the wrong scale on it, or your liquid was not well mixed, and you sampled a dilute portion. I know I've made these mistakes in the past, and I seem them all the time in this forum. Did you taste the wort? There would be a huge difference in sweetness and mouth feel.

Are you saying your starting gravity is 1.012? If so you’ll end with like .5-1% beer so unless you forgot to add the malt extract I would guess you made a mistake reading the hydrometer.

I would check the hydrometer in tap water. It should read 1.000 at 60F. Your Ohio tap water may be a bit lower in temp so it may read a bit above 1.000.

I will go out on a limb and assume this is an extract batch. If so how much extract did they give you? The kit may have been short but OG 12 is pretty low.
