Assuming you actually have the cap on properly, the carbonation level in a growler should not change a bit until you open it. It might oxidize or undergo other changes, but the amount of CO2 inside the container is fixed.

I just tape the cap and put it in the bottle shipper.

wow.... got a lot of replies here... i guess i am wrong.

so you can ship a growler with no loss. that's great news.

i am in the minority on growlers in general however -- they are a novelty, fun to take home from the brewery and consume within a couple days... not something i would keep around or think of shipping somewhere.

i will just stay away from growler threads in the future...

I successfully shipped my first one this week. Made sure the screw cap was tight, wrapped it in electric tape, put it in a trash bag, and surrounded it in heavy duty foam.

The only reason I sent the growler was that it was a draft only, one off beer that I wanted to give someone a chance to try.

Ftowne thanks for not hating on me... i hope what you shipped was your own brew or pliny the younger or something... i bow before your dedication to brew! i think there was a lot of love in your electric tape and that is what made it work... cheers!

btw, when does younger come out... i still haven't tried it.

    Uwotm8?

Not my own brew. Just a nice saison that was not bottled by Schlalfy. I didn't cure cancer or save a drowning baby, I just shipped some beer. It's not really that difficult.

Pack it like you're shipping a newborn baby (that is ok with being stuffed in a trash bag).

    Too much?

I only ship counter-pressure filled growlers. Those guys last for months.

Do you sanitize your growlers at home before taking them to get filled? (Or, do you know if Tin Bucket gives them a sanitizer spray?)

I clean them at home and ask the people at Tin Bucket to give them a thorough rinse before filling.
