When's the best time to swing by there if I'm trying to avoid the crowds? I skimmed the Yelp reviews, and sounds like it's a pretty big scene from open to close, but if anyone here has another opinion I'd weight that a bit heavier than the unwashed masses of Yelp. I'm in Austin from Thursday to Sunday morning, so Friday and Saturday are both viable options.

    Appreciate the help!

In my experience, getting there right when it opens on Saturday is perfect. Beat the rush, get your pizza ordered early, and take it easy.

The guys on here seem to love Friday evenings, too.

I've only been once on a Sunday right at opening, and it was great. Seemed to be getting a little crowded as we left around 3.

Right at noon either Friday or Saturday (opening time) (assuming you're talking about this weekend)...there's special extended hours for SXSW weekend.

Wanna echo Friday evening. Show up a few minutes early (4:50) and there'll be a guy already there to stamp your hand to save you time when the taps open at 5. Get in the line for bottles immediately, buy your bottles, and then sit down and enjoy the happiest place on earth with a beer in your hand.

The normal hours on Friday are 5 to 9 and it's always calm and chill. Saturdays can be really crowded. Sundays tend to be less busy as well. For me Friday evening is the best time to come by, but traffic can be brutal if you're driving southbound.

Thanks all for the help. Sounds like either Friday or Saturday right at the respective opening times is the way to go. This isn't until the first weekend of April, so I won't have the SXSW crowds to contend with. I think I'll aim for Saturday right at noon so we get a couple of hours of relaxing outside in the sun before the crowds hit.

The hard thing to conceptualize before heading to Jester King is how big and wide open it is. You could have a thousand people out there and it wouldn't feel all that crowded because of all the open space. It's a fantastic place to be on a warm, sunny spring day! Enjoy your time out there!

Ha, I'm sure you're correct. Having lived in NYC for 10 years now, I'm conditioned to assume anything that involves a crowd is going to be a claustrophobic nightmare. But rumor has it things are bigger in Texas.

As long as 500 of those 1000 aren't standing in line :stuck_out_tongue:
On a regular weekend, you'll spend 5-10 mins in line max. And you'll meet new people while your in line too.

So to piggyback here and add a few questions of my own to all you active texas BAs:

    (1) Does texas do growlers? Will jester King fill them? Do they need to be brewery-specific branded? Is there a limit on bottles to go? [Some breweries impose limits so even that if you're feeling rich or stupid you can buy six cases ... i'm anticipating high stupidity next month so im trying to see what, if anything might limit that ; ) ]

(2)Any idea what a cab ride would cost from say, the University area?

    Thanks. for the quick response

....as for (1) (d) your answer of "yes" then of course begs the next question: What is the limit? Does it just depend on how rare the beer is?

They release a list of bottles to go for each weekend along with limits. Here's the list for this weekend. http://jesterkingbrewery.com/files/BottlesToGo.pdf That's actually the fewest JK bottles I've seen on a list, they usually have more stuff available.

The only beer on that list with a limit is Boxer's Revenge (Limit 4).

It would be cheaper to probably rent a helicopter and fly there than take a taxi there, have it wait, and then come back.
