Hey y'all - brewed a base beer for a supplication clone 3 weeks ago. I'm looking to rack to secondary and add some brett to funk it up (bacteria will be added later).

I have 3 vials of brett (lambicus, brux and clausenii). Should I make one starter with all three strains or should I just pitch the three vials into the secondary next weekend? I've heard Brett works well even when underpitched. Thinking three vials might be enough and a starter isn't necessary here...

    Info:
    5 gallon batch
    1.060 OG
Primary yeast - Abbey Ale yeast

Haven't taken a gravity reading yet, so I can't offer up that information.

    Any advice?

To answer the specific question first - I would use Brett Brux, no starter. I think Russian River uses a blend of Bretts, but I seem to recall reading that Brux is the dominant strain.

If you haven't already read this thread at HBT, it has a lot of good info about cloning Supplication, some of it directly from Vinnie via an email someone posted. Obviously you already brewed your base beer but if you're still unsure of the Brett, bugs, and fruit, I would read through that thread.

Thanks, Xul. Have read that thread a few times. Sounds like I should give the Brux a head start and then add the other 2 strains. That's what I'll be doing.

IIRC Lambicus is actually the dominant strain in Supplication. HOWEVER, Vinnie is generally a Wyeast Brett guy. Wyeast Brett L is much more cherry-forward than the funkier White Labs strain. The White Labs cultures have fine cell counts for secondary fermentation, Wyeast has a lot more (more than necessary for most 5 gallon batches).
