Wow. Thanks for this. Growing up in Central NYS, this brings back some memories. And the picture in the article is awesome!

I'm originally from just outside Rochester, and a couple friends of my parents worked at the brewery. Pretty sure a Genny of some flavor was the first beer I ever had.

Nice read, I grew up in Buffalo in the late 70's/early 80s, had my fair share of Cream Ale

Lucky you! I would have to say Utica Club was my first beer. :slight_frown:

BTW, do you visit Rochester still? I have a lot of friends still their. It is and always was a cool town. And I miss having a Wegman's around.

As a kid, UC was my favorite, mostly because of the Schultz and Dooley commercials. When I was 10, we went a 2 week vacation. We were going to spend a week in the Thousand Islands, and my folks let me pick what to do the other week. One of the things was the Matt/UC brewery tour. :grinning:

I haven't been back to visit in about 6-7 years, but still have plenty of friends/family in the area. I get a 12 pack of Genny Bock sent out every spring. Goat Beer!

Selecting a brewery tour when only 10 years old. That is awesome!!

    Cheers!

That's not what he told Joe Sixpack - June 12, 2009 | Cream ale's an American original

Of course, considering how much 12 Horse Ale has changed over the years, I've always had my doubts that the Cream Ale is still "brewed/blended" the same way. Especially since the current ABV's of the Genesee beers are:

    Beer - 4.5%
    12 Horse - 5.1%
    Cream Ale - 5.2%

So, how do you blend the first two and get the third? :astonished:

Well, Dicken's Ale was originally a brand of the Syracuse Brewery, Inc., released in post-Repeal 1935 - "AN ENGLISH-TYPE BREW DISTINCTIVE IN ITS CHARACTER, FLAVOR, MELLOWNESS AND DELIGHTFUL HOP AROMA" according to an ad.

Genesee bought Syracuse's George Zett Brewery, Inc (maker of Zett's Sparkling Ale) a year or so after Repeal and ran it as the "Syracuse Brewery, Inc." up until 1937. Not sure what happened to the brand after that, when Genesee revived it, if it was the original '30s recipe, etc.

We took a Matt's Brewery tour every year in grade school. It seemed normal at the time but thinking back on 10 year old Catholic School kids in a brewery. I don't think they do that today. As far as Schultz and Dooley...everyone I knew had a set of them. They still make them....I was flirting with buying a set. This conversation will probably seal the deal.

I never cared for the stuff, but growing up in Upstate NY, this was a favorite of many a beer drinker. I think my uncle kept them in business in the 80's. :grinning:

P.S. Did you have a nun supervising you on the tour and did she 'pack' a ruler with her!?!

Cool story, cool pic. I absolutely love the current branding and can design. Great go to cheap beer, and a great standard for the style. Thanks for sharing OP

mmmmm Utica Club Pilsener Lager Beer. Always delicious up until the moment it hits your lips! I was still always excited for it in bottles on a Saranac Thursday though.

Was never a fan of Genny Cream Ale myself...but I really loved their 12 Horse Ale (though even 35-40 years ago it was a bit hard to find in central NJ).
I was really surprised to see it return briefly last year and picked up a sixer of it; it wasn't bad but it most definitely lacked some of the nice hop character it had once upon a time. In fact, that sixer I bought last year tasted pretty much identical to the Cream Ale.
