I'm making a quick St. Louis trip for a couple of baseball games. Any suggestions for bottle shops (the nearer downtown the better)? And if I can only make one tap room, which should it be? I've been to Schlafly a couple of years ago. Perennial? Civil Life? Thanks, guys.

Theres a Randalls location that is pretty close to downtown. It is located at I-44 and Jefferson.

As far a tap room, 4 Hands is very close to Busch Stadium and is worth the trip.

They also just opened a Flying Saucer restaurant right across the street from Busch Stadium that has (I think) 80 taps and many local breweries. The food is good too.

    Hope you enjoy your trip.

    Cheers

Schnucks Culinaria is downtown. Not sure how good the selection is, but I'm sure it's pretty good. Otherwise, Randall's is the way to go.

My personal vote for best tap room is Civil Life. But really, you'll be doing good if you go to Bailey's Range and take advantage of their huge lineup of local taps. Flying Saucer is a close 2nd as far as number of local taps. Be sure to try some 2nd Shift Art Of Neurosis if you see it.

Hey guys, raising this thread from the ashes for one more question...where around the stadium (other than Saucer) is good for food and beer?

4 hands for beer, and an insanely cheap diner (seriously I think I pad $6 for literally everything on their breakfast menu) 1.5 blocks away from 4 hands (toward the stadiums). The staff at 4 hands will surely know the name if you ask then for the local cheap eats. *It must also be known*...

Urban Chestnut was probably the single best brewery I visited during my recent transcontinental pilgrimage from CA to NY during American Craft Beer Week. Must.

Ninja edit is shite (via mobile, or at all ftm) so *out of 17 breweries visited by car

The Bridge is very close to Busch stadium. Their food, IMO, sucks ass. But their beer selection is excellent. Bailey's Range, under the same ownership, is also extremely close. Their beer selection is excellent, and more locally focused, albeit less extensive than The Bridge's. The tradeoff though is that the food is damn good.

So if you were only going to hit one place, especially on foot, Bailey's Range is your best option.

Though I would add that the beer by Pappy's is among the worst in the city. Buffalo puts out mostly undrinkable shit, and even if one continues on to Six Row, it doesn't really improve.

4 hands is my favorite for beer, civil life is also a great brewpub, randalls for bottles, and i wholeheartedly agree with baileys range for both food and beer, one of my favorite places downtown for sure, if you are looking for a beer bar with a more expanded selection than mostly local stuff, i would suggest iTap over flying saucer though

Glad this got revived I'll be flying in from CT and staying from June 6-9. Anyone have any opinions on Perennial's taproom? Hoping to hit Civil Life, Urban Chestnut, Schlafly, and some of the others listed above. Any must hit sites in or around town? Gonna stay by the botanical gardens, hiring the Native American mounds and the caves to the south.

Perennial has slowly been improving as a brewery. I was underwhelmed for a long while, but they have been hitting it out of the park lately. I would say that depending on what they have on tap, it is likely worthwhile.

If by other sites you mean beer ones, I would add the Bridge and iTap Soulard for bars. As far as stores go, The Wine and Cheese Place narrowly remains the best in town. There are other breweries in town, but it seems like you've got your bases covered with those you named, so long as you add 4 Hands (the best MO brewery) to the list.

You might also want to grab lunch at Gringos Tacos. 3 exclusive Schlafly beers, grasshopper tacos, and some pretty solid food overall (get the pozole). But in terms of essential dining destinations, I would say Niche and Pastaria (both have the same owner) are essential. Go to Pappy's if you like bbq, but expect massive lines.

In terms of non-beer stuff, places that may be worth your while: Laumeier Sculpture Park, St Louis Art Museum, St Louis Zoo. If you're a cigar guy, go to the Hill Cigar Co. BYOY/bring your own food, just buy your cigar(s) there. Fantastic place.

I forgot to add 4 Hands, definitely want to stop there. Any good farm to table type places? Glad you said cigars, been fiending one for a little while now.

Many people would suggest Farmhaus. Personally, I regard it as underwhelming for the price. But they have a very solid beer list. And they seat very few people, so if you do want to dine there, make a reservation first. Five has some merit, and after 10pm on Thurs-Sat, they serve a damn tasty (albeit seriously bastardized) variation of poutine. Sidney Street Cafe is fairly respectable as well. Home Wine Kitchen is solid. But Niche is definitely the best in class. (I have not yet been to Little Country Gentlemen, but the other restaurants from the same owner have all been solid, and their reputation is quite good.)

One place I should also mention is Salumi Beddu. Forbes called it the best salami in the nation. I wouldn't go that far, but it is damn good. They have a limited lunch menu, and sell a decent array (relative to their size) of cured meats you can take to go.

Thanks again, I'll have to start checking some menu's. If the weathers nice Thursday I'm going to try to head to the stadium for a game, anything close to a craft beer in there?

I wouldn't say you'll have a great selection, but it does exist. You will probably see some Schlafly, Ofallon, New Belgium, and Urban Chestnut. Maybe some Sam Adams and Boulevard too. If memory serves, the most craft options are around section 134 and 135. But you will find a craft tap here or there throughout.
