We just received word that Fred Eckhardt (famed beer writer and namesake of the HOTD beer) passed away this morning. From what Lisa and I have been told, there will be a small private service for family and close friends, followed by "the wake to end all wakes" at Hair of the Dog sometime in the next month.

If you have any bottles of Fred in your cellar, this is a damn good reason to crack one open.

    Rest in peace Fred. :slight_frown:

Will toast to Fred when I can. What's the Otto connection?

From Hair of the Dog – Otto is soothing and deep, with flavors of red and black fruits, vanilla and oak. Otto blends peaches and cherries with our distinguished beer, Fred. It is then aged in oak barrels for at least 18 months. Brewed with love and respect for my brewery’s strongest influence, Fred Eckhardt, and bears his name at birth.

Cheers, Fred. I trust there is fine beer to be had in the hereafter. If there isn't, I expect you will remedy that.

Most have no idea of what Fred did for good beer in the US. He was a Pioneer.

I met Fred about 3 times that I recall. The first 2 were at a homebrew festival/conference in Frankenmuth MI. The second time he did a talk on how beer and ice cream could go together. This was the 90's, so who knew? The last time was at the Rogue Ale house in SF about 10+ years ago. He was on his way to the Toranado a day or two before, and we chatted once I established I had heard him speak a few times about beers. He was humble, and gregarious, all at once.

Absolutely a huge influence on many of us in the early 1990s. Godspeed, Fred!

...and some of us in the early 1980s, as well.

Subscribed to both Talk to Your Beer and Listen to Your Beer. Fred published one of my first articles - I still have the galley proof page with a nice note from him on it.

I never met the man, but I know well his legacy. I wish comfort for his family and this community exists in part because of his passion and efforts. Rest in Peace.

Oh man -- bummed to hear this. I had the great pleasure to meet Fred and enjoy a beer and conversation with him at the Chicago Real Ale Festival back in the mid '90s. A great personality, a great beer mind, and a great man. Tonight's beer is for Fred.
