P.S. There once were some pictures of this event, at Goose Island Wrigleyville, floating around the internet -- if anyone knows of an archive, please post a link.

Got a wort stained copy of his "A Treatise on lager Beers" purchased in 1981 sitting on my desk. Thanks, Fred!

Sampling the "Big 3" Munich Amber Märzens (Spaten, Paulaner, and Hacker-Pschorr) in remembrance of Fred tonight. An honor and a pleasure to have met the man. Prosit!

Sad, always wanted to knock back a beer with him. He will be missed.

I will be at the Hair of the Dog in two weeks. Will try to have a Fred in his honor (assuming there is any available!). Never met you, but thanks Fred for taking us out of the Dark Ages of Beer!

Fred is amazing. Such a pleasant person and great contributor to craft beer history. Sad to see him pass, but anyone who has been to Fredfest knows the undying love the city of Portland and the beer community had for him, and rightly so. I was so fortunate to attend the previous Fredfest and see this outpouring of love in person. RIP Fred.

Bear Republic - Fredalicious Pinot Tart was the highlight among many at that event. was certainly worthy of using his name.

I don't believe I ever heard of him until now, but after reading these comments and watching the Brewing TV video posted above, it's clear he played an integral role in the re-birth of home brewing and craft beer in the U.S.

Wow. Read some of his stuff. Never had the honor of a conversation, but definitely knew how well he was...IS respected. I lift a glass in his honor, and I will listen to that beer. Cheers Fred!
