I'm looking into getting/starting to use a randall for hops in IPAs and other flavor additions in stouts and sours...just curious who out there uses one regularly and what they think about it? Also, do you use a store bought or homemade version? If it's store bought, which one and if it's homemade, what plans did you use? I've done a little searching here and on the web and have only found a few resources, so I'm looking for more input to base my decision on.
    Thanks!

I made my own, based pretty much on the plans published by the Maltose Falcons, IIRC. A piece of cake to build. It works like it's supposed to.

Do you use it for hops only VikeMan?

No, I've used it with cut up cherries.

We have a local brewery here (Fremont Brewing) that Randalizes quite a few imaginative things with good results. Blood orange, rosemary IPA? Boom!

Can that water filter turned Randall be used as a hop back; with water that just stopped boiling? I would think not with all that plastic; mixing 180-190 degree water with plastics doesn't sound like a good idea- anyone done it?

If I couldn't use it as a Randall and a hop back I would not buy it and instead get a STainless steel one instead.

I've got a hol rocket and it kicks major ass. A bit do wife but worth it IMO.
You cold also get the ones more beer and other vendors sell for a bit less than the hop rocket or make your own for even less. Plans are on the Internet for it.

So is that water filter turned Randall's plastic a variety that can withstand need boiling temperatures without plasti flavor stripping or breaking?

I really don't have a desire for it on the hot end...just as a traditional Randall on the cold end.

If you THINK you might like one on the hotside, then get a Hop Rocket. I bought the QD fittings for it to use on the cold side to hook it up inline with kegs.. Can dryphop/randal through it to another keg, or to another glass.

Works pretty damn well on the hotside as well.

Just made one myself to go between kegs...threw it in the keggerator after Xfering to keg. In a day or two will hook it back up and run it between kegs again. Haven't even traditional dryhopped this one...curious to see what the "keg round trip" will do for the aroma/flavor all by itself.

I have used a Blichmann hop rocket to do that, though it was a historic beer with hops that were not over the top. It works, but taste the beer after you pass the beer through, you might want to make several passes back and forth between the kegs to get the most out of the hops. You can even dump and reload the hops to get the aroma you are after.

I have a Hoprocket, but am too lazy to change fittings to use it as a Randall. What I like about the one I made is that I can use pellet hops if I want to. Still some perfecting to do, though...what I did was take the string off of a 5 micron string filter and then wrapped a hop bag around the center plastic tube. Seems to work well as is, but the proofs in the drinking
