I had a half pint of this last night. Actually, I should correct myself, I had half a half pint and that was forced down. I generally like to give a beer the full benefit of a doubt and consume it all, at least giving it the dignity of not wasting any, but this was tough. Am I missing something here? All I got was sour corn on the nose and palate. I had this on draught at the Hay Merchant and in all fairness, was consumed after Sourthern Star Sour Smoked Porter, Rye-On-Rye, and a half pint of Dig, along with a side of mac n cheese cause that's how I roll, and all of those tasted about what I had been expecting, but all I got from the Luck Ol' Sun was sour corn. So, am I missing something here, or do I need to go back and try this?
I had it at Hay Merchant the other day. I did not get any sourness. Just simple yeast and fruity esters. Nothing special, but nothing bad either. Much better Belgian pale ales available...locally made at the (Devils Backbone). Just my opinion.
I had a pint on draft and wasn't impressed much by it. Not bad but wasn't great either. I may give it a second chance myself.
I like it. Perhaps there is some batch differentiation or there is something about the way it is being served or perhaps even the distance that it is travelling. The Austin Saucer has been going through a couple kegs every Sunday and Monday when it is $3 a pint and all I got were positive comments. Had a couple pints myself and enjoyed it. Not only because it is the cheapest Belgian style beer made in the state, but I think the flavor is right up there with the other Belgian style TX brews that are $40-$60 more per keg. I will admit, I have heard some negative comments, but only from people that are sipping off different kegs than the ones I have tried, so there is something else going on. Don't write it off completely. Ask for a sample next time you see it somewhere else as you might be able to change your opinion.
It's important to remember that this is not a Belgian strong pale ale like Devil's Backbone. It's only 5.5% abv. I think it's a great sessionable Belgian pale ale.
I've had a few pints of it this week. I found it a little on the sweet side but very drinkable, and sessionable too at 5.5%. It's got some good but subtle BPA characteristics. I'd be happy to drink a couple of these as a thirst quencher on a hot day after work, before I get into something more flavoursome and interesting.
I had it at the Houston saucer, and wasn't much of a fan. Wasn't a bad beer, but wasn't all that great. I can say I wouldn't recommend it to anyone.
Had not had it in a long time until today. Tasted like they changed it to a pils. different yeast or something.
Is this being bottled? I know they have had problems in that department.. but I'm a Belgian pale fan.. so I'd like to try it.. I like Icon Red and Barn Burner and Devil's Backbone... though all are different.
Ok. I have to ask. When you guys are saying a beer is bad or good. What are you comparing it to? Are you comparing it to your favorite beer in that particular style? Are you comparing it to the BJCP 2008 guidelines for the style category? Or are you judging it based upon the perceived, or stated brewer's interpretation of the style?
