Leap year, thank you, because you seemed to have given a handful of bars a reason to pour GI's Rare on 2-29. Prices, pretty ridiculous, but the experience to have a pour without having to travel or trade was worth it. I went to a great little North Shore location where it was about 20 people (40 pours total) all sipping a 22$ pour at the bar. When everyone got a pour (bartenders included) we all did a cheers with our drink and then silence hit the bar as we all took our first sip and SAVORED. Bonus points that the bar raffled off the box/beer for display afterwards for free. In the end, I found it as an awesome communal beer experience and again cemented in my head that not all beer nerds and BA's are neck beard hipsters.
Anyone else get a RARE pour? What was your experience? Worth the price?

Had no idea this was happening but would have gone for it.

    I saw prices ranging from $18-22 for a 4 oz. pour. #pass

I am a bit embarrassed to admit that I would have paid that, like the damn fool that I am...

I weighed heavily on price vs. pour, but I told myself "self, you aren't going to see this again, in the end beer is a fun hobby, and what an epic Click to complete". For those reasons, I saddled up to the bar and paid my dues. In the end, the beer was awesome, but the communal aspect of everyone at the bar having the same beer and all realizing the rarity also added to the worthiness of the price point. Curious now, any other BAs get a shot?

Kind of crappy advertising for it! I usually follow things pretty closely but missed the Buk's one. Were there other bars in Boston/Cambridge doing it?

Buks Boston, Stoddards, and Hugh ONeills were the places I saw. Hugh's, IMO, did pretty good at dropping hints, posting almost 3 weeks ago about the day and last week about the actual time. Stoddards talked about it on there post 1 day prior, and Buks just hours before. Personally, surprised nothing was listed on BA events page, but in the end if it was all the above bars would have been slammed.

I happened upon Buks not knowing. Passed on the pour. Ive had it and honestly it doesn't hold a candle to other beers I've had at bars on draft or from bottles with bigger pours at half the price. Couldn't begin to rationalize it. Maybe if I had never had it.

$20/4oz is really not that much. The bottles were selling for $60 each at 16.9 oz so thats very little markup compared to retail. I would have gladly paid so I didnt have to crack the one I have in my basement to get a try.

price is fine for a tick for something that's otherwise a massive pita to acquire. sometimes paying $20 is worth it - that's a whole lot cheaper than trading a bunch of bottles for 1 Rare and not even being sure you'll like it.

Yeah, price really isn't that bad. That's 25% of a bottle that retails for what, 60 bucks?

AHHH, I hate to say as it has been my honey hole for some time. Always gets good drafts and turns over at an appropriate rate. Hugh O Neills in Malden is the bar, just don't share this with the other New England BAs

Each bar received only limited amount of bottles, and it sold within the hour.

I was at Hugh O'Neils, too. Well run event, glad it was barely advertised. Got to keep the GI tasting glass, too. $22 for 4 ounces isn't crazy at all considering retail. Figuring what the secondary market current price is, it's a steal! Not the first time I have had it and it is certainly not worth $50 a bottle more than regular, but MA saw none at distro, so what the hell, right? It is damn good, though.

Also, if we are sharing secrets, you may as well tell them about Mystic Station. A block away and as good a draft list as Hugh O'Neils, but it is a bit cheaper. (They have Keno, too. ) I live 3 miles away in Melrose and am happy to have discovered both of them. It is great to finally have some good craft beer bars on the lower North Shore. Even better, their draft lists are always updated daily online. Surprisingly a rarity for greater Boston area bars.....
