Wondering if anyone has any experience with these rare hop varieties, and if so, what are they like:

    Cerera
    Tardif de Bourgone (French)
    Shinswanse (Japanese)
    Blisk

A fellow home brewer has these varietals planted in his hop yard and I can get cuttings from him if I'd like. Thanks for the help.

PS, please don't reply with a link to the Freshops Variety Descriptions, saying a hop is pleasant, or has a hoppy aroma is obsurd, that's like saying an IPA smells like beer, or hops, and that is about the extent of their descriptors for these hops.

Tardif de Bourgone (3 to 6 % AAU) is a Strisselspalt variety similar in character to Mt. Hood or Hallertau Hersbrucker. Typically used for aroma, it's a very low oil lager hop with very mild Noble, herbal, lemony, spicy black currant presence.

    Never heard of the others.

Thanks for the feedback. So Tardif is a good hop for doing German Lagers, and Belgians (esp Saisons) then? If so, then that one is a for sure.

A buddy of mine made a German pilsener with it as well as a few other hops. It was good.

Also, the Japanese is "Shinshuwase" hops if that helps.

This is the only useful information I could find on Shinshuwase via a google search:

    http://www.ars.usda.gov/SP2UserFiles/person/2450/hopcultivars/60042.html

Very high cohumulone at 51%, while very low in everything else.

I suggest visiting your friend, rubbing the hops between your hands, and smelling them to see if they are pleasant to you. If he lives to far, perhaps you can ask him to mail you a single cone of each varietal.

Thanks for the link, that is the same thing Freshops has listed on their site as well, wish they would give some information on the aroma other than "considered to be an aroma hop".

I will have to do this and see what comes of it. Thanks for the help.

Saw this thread after posting in the single hop one... What can one expect from a single hopped sorachi-ace brew. I've got some around and I'm not sure if I want to go APA, BPA, or Kolsch.

I know they are supposed to be quite citrus in a lemmony way up front, but what about the rest? Fruity, grassy, spicy, floral, herby, or resinous (dank/ catty) layers?
