It was a lot easier to give 5s before the 5-part rating system was implemented. You can find something imperfect with almost any beer.

The closest thing to a 5 I gave was a 4.96 to Funky Buddha's Last Buffalo in the Park.

I've given a couple of 5s out. Most notably to HF Abner (perfect DIPA) and 3F Lente (perfect Gueuze). I really can't imagine anyone improving upon those beers in those styles.

I don't rate, but I think Celebrator Doppelbock is perfect.

So far my only 5 across the board has been Founders CBS. But theres plenty more to try and I'm sure I'll come accross another 5.

To say there are no fives is absolutely absurd. That's like saying there are no perfect music songs (Pearl Jam's Ten) or perfect pieces of art (Picasso).

And those that don't rate Pliny a five are crazy. To me.

Not giving fives is just being contrarian just to be contrarian. In my opinion.

Music and art are even more subjective no? Ten and Picasso are not perfect songs/pieces of art for my tastes. I don't think it's being contrarian to say there is no perfect beer/piece of music/piece of art. And how is someone crazy for not rating Pliny a 5? It's crazier to think everyone should. If I rated it would get a 4 - sue me.

If you could drink/listen to/see everything in existence, then maybe you would be able to pass some sort of judgement. But it would still be:

    a) subjective
    b) not factoring in beer/music/art yet to come

I'm not shitting on anyone giving a beer a 5. I'm just saying people who don't want to give a 5 should be respected as well.

No 5s, but I just can't stop loving 8-Bit Pale Ale. I have no idea how it's only rated 85 on here, I absolutely love it. Would drink it forever and ever.

Bourbon Barrel Plead the 5th was hands off the best BA imperial stout I tasted. That was a perfect 5.

I totally agree. I should have continued, it is all, ultimately personal preferences, but to say there are no fives I think is absurd.

I honestly believe there is perfection out there. Across the board. It just needs to be found.

When it comes to ratings I'm no expert. I know what I like though. Try to be the most objective if it's a beer style that is not my favorite. Every craft beer brewed had someone work way harder to make it than I would to pan it because it's not my favorite. I'd rather give any beer a 4 or 5 than a 2 or lower. Unless it is Rogue Voodoo Donut Maple Bacon. That thing was just not good.
