This is true it is very hard to do these types of beers well and not have the beer come out a brutally cloying mess of disjointedness, DL is proof of that.

We plan to do one with FG of 10.72 and it looks like we are going to have to mash really high, save wort, and do multiple wort and yeast additions to achieve what we want. What a pain, but beer yeast can only do so much without special technique.

Since you hate it and all.

Vanilla Dark Lord is one of the best beers I have ever had.

That sounds awesome. I'm curious as to how you'll pull that off. 1.072 is way up there. What's your grain bill and original OG? Are you planning to brew multiple batches and mix the first runnings? What strain are you using?

Planning to do an all dayer brewday with 4 brewers set up at a friend's house with 4 mash tuns and shooting for a stupid high temp. mash, the exact dynamics haven't been worked out yet. Yeah, stupid grain bill, and to top it all off the recipe calls for pitching 4 different yeasts, and we will need to save enough wort and starter to feed it along the way. IIRC it starts at 37 Plato, which is 1.164. The top brewer in my club (also a long time BA) is gonna help with the specifics and be brewmaster for the project.

I have read DL finishes at 1.064, not sure if that changes year to year.

Might as well do a parti-gyle and make a normal beer from all that grain as well.

Did I push a wrong button?! It's good, but overly sweet. I don't want to feel like I'm drinking a liqueur. I was giving OP my opinion and advice. I'd take one BA Speedway by the way . Unless of course I was using the Dark Lord for trade bait, then give me the Dark Lord so I can trade it to someone like you for 5 BA Speedways lol

Sounds like an awesome project. Good luck and let me know how it turns out. Maybe we can trade some HB down the road.

FWIW, they only had the regular Bourbon Barrel Dark Lord at this years Firestone fest. They year before they had Vanilla Bean.

I'm planning to brew a clone attempt in the New Year. Any interest in a bottle for bottle trade?

A buddy and I traded a bottle of BVDL '13 for the TG trio + a Twilight of the Idols, though the Twilight was more of a bonus for us agreeing to do it IP and drive most of the way.
