I'm looking for some recommendations for fairly easily-accessible, relatively inexpensive barrel aged beers (I know, not the easiest criteria in the world). I'd prefer non-stout styles for purposes of this thread. Although I love BA stouts, they're commonly discussed, so I have a pretty good feel for what's out there. That being said, if you have a suggestion for a good, easier to find BA stout, shout it out. Also prefer small formats (12oz), but again, will take any suggestions you all can provide.

For me, I'd prefer things available in the Midwest (Michigan), but am happy to open to thread to anywhere for the benefit of other BA's looking for the same thing.

I've tried the Kentucky Bourbon Barrel Ale (meh) and the Backwoods Bastard (delicious, one of my favorites!).. perhaps an Old Ale, Barleywine, or even Belgian style comes to mind?

    Cheers!

In Michigan look for New Holland Dragons Milk or Pilgrims Dole. Both available in 12oz and should be relatively easy to find. They are not the cheapest 4 pack but still beat bomber prices.

New Holland Dragon's Milk is year round, and pretty tasty. Not terribly expensive.

Goose Island Sofie is a White Wine BA sour saison with lemon peel added, and its year round and not terribly priced. Oh not to mention, its like amazing.

It's seasonal, but I've easily cobbled together a case of 2011 Weyerbacher Insanity in 4-packs over the last few months, and have a plan to buy a case every year until I die. Love this oak aged english barleywine.

Weyerbacher is great for this. Insanity and Heresy in 12oz. format and Blasphemy (BA Quad) in 12oz and 750s.

I feel it is worth mentioning, for those who are unfamiliar, Insanity is a bourbon barrel barleywine.

Thanks for the responses so far... i've tried the Dragon's Milk, but it's been a while so probably time for a revisit -- also will look for the Pilgrim's Dole. Been seeing the Sofie at my local bottle shop for a while now and haven't pulled the trigger yet - maybe I'll try for the upcoming long Thanksgiving weekend.

Weyerbacher isn't available here in MI, but if I'm ever traveling somewhere they're distributed, I'll make sure to look them up.

    Keep 'em comin'!

Southern Tier - Unearthly Oak Aged Imperial/Double IPA...fuckin' amazing!

    Dogfish Head - Burton Baton

    Innis and Gunn has a bunch of barrel aged beers, from casks of rum, scotch, whiskey, etc;

Backwoods Bastard is pretty awesome, like drinking Jim Beam in a can with some carb

    +1 to Dragon's Milk

and even though this may be too pricey for what you are looking for I actually found wide price variability in Hoppin Frog BA BORIS (anywhere from 14.99 to 19.99)

I also enjoyed Bluegrass Brewing Jefferson Reserve Bourbon Barrel Stout while living in Kentucky, and this was roughly 8-10$ a 4 pk

I'm drinking a Weyerbacher Insanity right now so I'll 2nd the other 2 posts and recommend that, if you can get it. Comes in 12oz bottles too.

Also, I know you said no stouts but Schlafly Imperial Stout is a great bourbon barrel aged stout that's accessible and $10-13 a 750ml

Uinta's Crooked line Cockeyed Cooper or Labrynth are other great year-round barrel aged treats.

Thanks! Unfortunately no Schlafly here either, but I'll definitely keep my eye out there as well. Always looking for a good, affordable BA beer, no matter the style.

Schlafly must have some weird distribution if they send beer to MD/VA and not MI - not that MI doesn't have enough good beers of their own though! (Wants to do a MI/IN beer trip)

If you're in a Hoppin' Frog state, BA Boris seems to be readily available. Imperial stout in bombers, so not quite what you're after, but a great beer.

I know it used to come in 12oz (as seen on the beer page). I don't know if they still bottle it in 12s.
