Hey all - anyone from my locale around here? Lots of good places in general area(Tired Hands/Troegs/Pizza Boy etc. are all easily doable), but what are your thoughts on the "local" beer scene?

Liberty Tap room is basically next door to me, and has had a pretty decent tap list lately. Pretty good bottle section and good prices, but I have never seen anything rarer there.

Barley Mow is a newer one, and while they have an ok selection and a chill little spot, their prices are stupid. $30 growler fills for pretty standard stuff are common

Chatty Monks brews their own stuff, but it's nothing stellar. Meh

Mari's Six Pac...Haven't been there in years. Has it improved?

Anyway, anyone local want to hook up for some bottle shares and whatnot, let me know.

I'm down in York and there's quite a few users I know that are in the general area (York, Harrisburg, Hersheyish areas). Local beer scene down here is ok, a couple places in York area that have respectable taplists but insane prices on bottles, and there's a good bottle shop or two but again, insane prices (I got two bombers a week or two ago at one place that in all honesty should have cost no more than 22-23 bucks and it was 30 after tax, similar upcharge on 4/6 packs also).

I go to Pizza Boy fairly regularly but not all the time (usually at least once a month, sometimes 2-3 times, though not as much recently due to money), troegs occasionally as well

im in the reading area and find liberty to be really overpriced and barley mow to be very fairly priced for growlers and drafts. bottles are a tad high, but with the cheap growlers/drafts it all balances out

You know, it's a good point. I'm actually looking now and their growlers aren't too bad right now price-wise. I feel like either they are doing better on price or I'm just mis-remembering. I think I may be thinking about their bottle prices and how it's a bit prohibitive to do a 6 pack.

Liberty, I think their prices for draft stuff is kinda high, but pretty good on mid-range stuff - Getting a mixed 6 pack of 90min and two-hearted for $13 always felt pretty fair to me.

I am in Reading area, too. Barley Mow draft prices and growler prices are completely reasonable. Heck, $5 for a 13 oz pour of Hill Farmstead Mary yesterday; sign me up! They regularly have $5/20 oz pours. They are one of the best priced bars for drafts in the area, to be honest. Yes, their bottle prices can be on the higher side if you're comparing them to something like Whole Foods or Wegmans (some of which won't even get the bottles they get and is really an unfair comparison anyway [i.e. mom & pop versus large retail chains]), but they're pretty much in line with Mari's and Liberty.

Anyway, Barley Mow is my local hang since I'm close, but Canal Street is also a nice spot as well as Paradise by the Slice. I hit Mari's up every so often for bottle shopping, largest bottle selection in the area by far.

Yeah, maybe I need to cut Barley Mow some slack. For some reason, something turned me off on them, but yeah, if that Hill Farmstead is still on today, I'm stopping after work.

Thanks for the heads up on them. I feel bad that I've been giving them a bad wrap in my head. Maybe I'll hit Mari's up too since I'll be over that way today.

Yeah, who knows it might be, it was a half barrel of Mary. They are usually spot-on with updating BeerMenus too and I don't see any updates today so you might be in luck.

Graduated from Albright back in 07 we used to frequent Mari's often. I hope the weird old guys that were always drinking at the counter are still there. Sadly I was broke during those times so mostly drank lions head. Glad to see the beer scene is starting to look a little better up there.

So I just hit up Mari's last night for the first time in years, and damn....their selection is amazing. They have really stepped up their game in a big way. I snagged a bottle of Bruery Tart of Darkness, so it was a good trip.

Two days and it's still on is impressive. I figured that would be gobbled up rather quickly. Probably lasted a bit longer due to it being a Pilsner, to be quite honest. Not many people give the style a fair shake.

Oh, and @TKozuch I forgot to mention Ganly's on Brownsville Rd has really stepped up their craft beer game, too.

Damn @ShanePB , I have lived in the area for like 6 years, and never even heard of Ganly's. That's a good place to take the wife for "dinner".

Yeah, they seem to post the "rotating" drafts every so often on Facebook, but their BeerMenus page is up to date.

Yeah, I drive over from Mechanicsburg to get beer there sometimes. They have quite a bit of the Philly distro that doesn't make it all the way to Harrisburg area, like Tank 7 etc.

Can't believe it took that long to mention Ganly's. Great selection and super food at reasonable prices. I think Tuesday is flight night.

So my buddy owns and runs the West Reading Tavern and they are tapping a keg of Hill Farmstead Nordic Saison this Friday. Just a heads up. They have stepped up their beer game as of late, and their food is generally awesome.

Possibly a bit out of the way for ya, but the bar/bottleshop at Sabatini's Pizza in Exeter, PA (near wilkes barre, not reading) is amazing. LOTS of stuff that is hard to find.. honestly nearly 3000 bottles in the shop, and 23 drafts.. will fill growlers and even has a crowler machine.

I am a mile or two away from Liberty Taproom myself. They had two kegs of Hill Farmstead last week that lasted a couple days. I was advised last Thursday that they had a rep in and they plan to have at least one HFS on tap at all times. When they had a GI tap takeover a couple months ago they had BCBS and four variants, most of which stayed in tap for around a freaking week. They do get a good allocation of BCBS variants as they always have the $3 pints of GI IPA and sell quite a bit of it. They have had various Carton beers on tap pretty regularly. The food is incredibly hit or miss. Tap pricing seems high per ounce and the pricing/pour size is incredibly random. When they first opened everything was in pints except rarities and beers with ABV over 7% (I think it was 7%). Now 75% of the draft list is in 12 oz pours. Then the growler pricing is even more illogical when compared to pricing for their individual servings. They do take very good care of their taplines.

Send me a message and we can enjoy a couple together.

Edit: Looks like they have HFS Excursions #3 on tap at the moment.
Edit Edit: Seems it may be time for a late lunch . . .
