I went into Readington W&S today on my day off. I was looking for JW Lees, but noticed a sign that had De Dolle Special Reserva for $5.99/bottle. It even listed the abv at 13% on the sign. They were also discounting Stille Nacht for $4.99/bottle. I picked up the last two Special Reserva and the last 5 Stille Nacht.

When I get to the register, the sale prices did not ring up. I mention it to the clerk, who then calls the manager. The manager tells me that there's no sale going on. I walk both of them back to the handwritten sign, and the manager tells me that he'll give me the discount on Stille Nacht ($0.26/bottle) but not the Special Reserva because their sign doesn't say Oerbier on it.

I tell the manager that De Dolle currently only makes one Special Reserva, the Oerbier, and that the abv listed on their sign matches up to the abv on the two bottles. No dice.

So instead of offering it to me at their discounted price, or even their cost if that's what he was worried about, he took down the sign, ripped it up, and told me I had to pay full price...about $9.49/bottle.

I've spent about $3,000 in this store over the past 3 years....and they got my last dollar today.

Bad decision by their management...bad business practices...now bad for their bottom line...

Any similar experiences with stores local to you?

The guy sounds like an ass if he ripped the sign up like that in front of you. From my years in retail, we always went by the philosophy of if something was mistagged, the customer would get that price, and we'd then get rid of the sign...don't think you can do that with alcohol, though.

Hope you can find another good store in town.

I think the law in NJ is that you can't sell it for less than you paid for it...fine...but at least offer me that price if the advertised price is less than what they paid for it...don't tell me that it's not the same beer and then rip up the sign...either way, there are plenty of other quality places between my home and work, and Readington just got dropped from the rotation...

Nooooooooooo! Readington needs your tax dollars!

I live like 2 minutes from Readington Wine and Spirits and they always seem clueless there. I usually go to Somerville Supersaver if I can.
