Three Notch'd The Ghost APA has been a solid go to for me.

A Tiny Beautiful Something by Maine Beer Co is my favorite. I believe I actually quoted OP word for word in my review that it is a great example of a Pale Ale and not just an IPA in disguise.

Deschutes Red Chair is another a really good APA, you should be able to get it locally as it's in season now. as others have mentioned, Deschutes Mirror Pond is great and I do like DC Brau Public as well (this boarders IPA, imo).

I definitely agree with you that many of the popular APAs are IPAs.

Sierra Nevada Pale Ale is a classic and a standard of the style. Great Lakes Burning River, Sweetwater 420, MO and Tiny Beautiful Something by Maine...many that have been mentioned already.

Good call, I really enjoyed that one when I've had it in a mixed 12.

Lizard king is there with z dust for me, ipa in apa clothing. New dogtown is a great APA, as is mirror pond, but I will throw great divide denver pale ale. Solid beer, hopped more like an english pale. Then again if APA are too hoppy for ya, maybe an english pale is what you seek.

No Zombie Dust posts due to the fact the OP said no APA's that border on IPAs and the APA has to be available in Virginia.

One Claw has just become available in the UK and everyone, myself included is raving about it. I just wish we were getting fresh cans and not ones canned late August.

I didn't like it at first but it has grown on me considerably. I am finishing up a case this week and will buy another this weekend. At 4.5% abv it is a great beer to drink all Sunday afternoon.

Daisy Cutter and Fist City. I do not think Lizard King is what the OP is looking for.

Fort Point... but people argue that it's an IPA.

Living in VA, many have posted my current favorite APAs you can get easily:
    FW Pale 31
    Lagunitas New Dogtown
Deschutes both Mirror Pond and Red Chair
Smuttynose Shoals Pale Ale (if you can find it, I haven't seen this APA in MD for almost 2 years)

Also highly recommend Stone 2.0 Pale Ale. Pale 31 and Stone have been my go-to APA last 6 months.
